Roadrunner Men Win At UGA

1st in Non-D1 Division

The Equestrian Center at the University of Georgia is usually reserved for mammals with four legs.  On Saturday mammals with two legs took to the track and they didn't disappoint.  The men's cross country team from Dalton State College finished in 1st place in the non-division 1 category of the UGA Invitational held on Saturday morning in Athens, GA.  In a weekend being led by Freshmen for Dalton State, Ryan Gebelein from Heritage High School in Catoosa County paced the Roadrunners.  He was followed in scoring by Sophomore Cole Thornton, Freshman Devin Swafford, Junior Saddoth Fraire, and Freshman David Murrillo.  All-American Spencer Head was leading the meet through 3 miles but aggravated a hamstring injury and pulled up limp.  Dalton State XC coach Andy Meyer decided to shelf his best runner for the rest of the meet to prevent further injury.  "Our underclassmen did very well in their first college race.  The first college race is always eye opening; some eyes were opened today and they responded beautifully. I pulled Spencer from the race after he was leading at the 3 mile mark as a precaution.  He was experiencing some pain in his hamstring so I made the decision to go ahead and pull him from the race.  The season is long and he is needed," said DS men's cross country coach Andy Meyer.  The next cross country meet for the Dalton State men's team will be the 2nd Annual Dalton State Cross Country Classic being held at the Grove Level North Cross Country Park in Varnell.  It will be a preview for all Southern States Athletic Conference teams as the SSAC Championships will be held at the same location in November.
