Hattiesburg, Miss. – William Carey eliminated the first year Dalton State soccer team Friday night in the first round. The No. 4 seeded Crusaders knocked-off the Roadrunners, 6-0, to earn the right to play No. 8 seed Auburn Montgomery on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT.
William Carey scored two goals before the intermission and came out even stronger with four more goals.
"We had a great first year," said DS Coach Kerem Daser. "We qualified for conference in the first season. It was a tough loss and I give credit to Coach Barry Farrell and William Carey. They were the better team tonight and deserved the win."
Coach Farrell met with the Roadrunner players following the game and told them to be proud of how far the team has come in a short time. Coach Daser agreed. "We are very young and I think this game will help motivate during the spring. We were competitive in the top NAIA conference in the country and we will be much better next year."
"We thank our amazing supporters," the coach added. "We also thank our lone senior, Ibrahim Sissoko, who was an amazing team captain. We look forward to having him as a student assistant next season."
In other SSAC play-off action No. 2 seed Martin Methodist shut out No. 7 Middle Georgia State, 4-0, and No. 3 seed Bethel (Tenn.) edged No. 6 seed Faulkner (Ala.), 4-3.
The Roadrunners finished the season with 11 wins, seven losses and one tie.
