Dalton State Strikes Early in Second Half to Defeat Tennessee Southern, 3-1

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State erupted for three goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to earn a 3-1 conference victory over Tennessee Southern on Friday at Dalton Stadium. Joao Victor, Fabio Barbosa, and Jake Coltart each found the net.

FIRST HALF
Dalton State controlled much of the opening half, outshooting Tennessee Southern 5-3 and generating six corner kicks. The Roadrunners created their first opportunity in the 12th minute when Fabio Barbosa sent an attempt high before Jonathan Mindegaard had a shot blocked less than two minutes later. Georg Wissler also fired high in the 18th minute.

Tennessee Southern received an opportunity to take the lead on a penalty kick in the 13th minute, but Dalton State goalkeeper Bernardo Manzano denied Filippo Fregoli to keep the match scoreless. The Roadrunners continued to apply pressure, with Nicolas Cuna forcing a save from Wilmer Jonsson in the 34th minute and Jake Coltart having an attempt blocked in the 39th. Neither side broke through before halftime, sending the match into the break tied at 0-0.

SECOND HALF
The Roadrunners wasted little time taking control after the restart. Just 39 seconds into the second half, Joao Victor scored the opening goal off assists from Kai Reading and Jamal Gizir to give Dalton State a 1-0 advantage.

Dalton State doubled its lead at the 47:23 mark. Hudson Ferreira put an attempt on frame that Jonsson initially saved, but Fabio Barbosa capitalized on the ensuing opportunity to make it 2-0. The offensive surge continued in the 50th minute when Gizir forced another save and Coltart followed with Dalton State's third goal. Gizir received the assist as the Roadrunners built a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the half.

Tennessee Southern pulled one back in the 68th minute when Daquan Duhaney scored off an assist from Felix Hammel. Dalton State prevented the Firehawks from drawing any closer, with Manzano recording saves against Lorick Gustave in the 80th minute and Ezer Binoy in the 89th to secure the 3-1 victory.
