SSAC Announces Men's And Women's Soccer Award Winners

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference announced the 2020-21 year-end men's and women's soccer award winners Tuesday. Individual award winners, All-Conference teams, Barnes & Noble College All-Academic Team and other awards were released.

MEN
Coach of the Year: Saif Alsafeer, Dalton State (Ga.)
Player of the Year: Justin Riescher, Dalton State (Ga.)
Defensive Player of the Year: Zachary Perry, Dalton State (Ga.)
Offensive Player of the Year: Justin Riescher, Dalton State (Ga.)
Freshman of the Year: Caoimhin McConnell, William Carey (Miss.)
Newcomer of the Year: Reece Harrison, William Carey (Miss.)
Golden Gloves: Aaron Fraire, Dalton State (Ga.)
Golden Boot: Justin Riescher, Dalton State (Ga.)
Sportsmanship Award: William Carey (Miss.)

Noteworthy

Riescher won three individual awards after ranking 4^th in the NAIA with 18 goals. He scored in all but two games, including five multi-goal efforts
Alsafeer guided the Roadrunners to their first-ever regular season championship to earn his second Coach of the Year honor in the last three seasons
The Roadrunners Perry and Fraire were awarded for their defensive prowess as the team ranked 9^th in the country with seven shutouts and never allowed more than two goals in a game. Fraire allowed only seven goals in seven starts, while Perry played in all 12 games and added 11 points
For the Crusaders, McConnell and Harrison were honored after contributing to the 7^th-ranked team in the country, with Harrison leading a defense that had eight shutouts
Fraga, Fortune and Xavier repeat as first-team honorees, while Riescher, Cabello, Ackander and Fraire were second-team honorees last season

Noteworthy

Santos earned Player of the Year honors for the third-straight year after pacing the top-ranked Crusaders with 12 goals and 12 assists. She leads the NAIA, averaging 1.0 assist per game and is 8^th in points per game (3.0)
Veronica Herrera earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for the Crusaders, becoming the fourth-different WCU defender to win it in the last four years. WCU had seven shutouts and allowed more than one goal in only one contest. Lang was the top vote-getter among goalkeepers after allowing only nine goals in 14 games
Also for WCU, Pinon played in all 15 games and produced three goals and five assists, while Sousa has seven goals and five assists in 12 games
Downey earned Golden Boot honors for the Knights after scoring the most goals in conference play, with nine. She scored in every conference game
Santos is a first-team selection for the fourth-straight year, while Rusanen, Herrera, Lang and White earned the honor for the second straight season
