Roadrunner Men And Women Have Strong Showing


VARNELL, Ga. - The Dalton State Men's and Women's Cross Country teams had an impressive showing Saturday morning in the 2nd Annual Dalton State Cross Country Classic, being held this year at Grove Level North Park in Varnell, Georgia.  Both teams brought home hardware as they placed second overall. 

The 8:00 a.m. Women's 5K featured Dalton State's Sophomore All-American Emily Poole.  Poole did not disappoint the crowd as she took the individual championship in a time of 18:40.  Joining Poole in the top 5 was Senior Natalie Hensley with a time of 19:43.  All five Dalton State Women finished in the top 12 once again with Gloria Pascual finishing 9th, Anna Karen Padilla, 11th and Nayeli Jacobo in 12th.

It wasn't enough though as Blue Mountain College placed four runners in the top 7 to narrowly edge the Roadrunners on points 36-32 to take 1st place.

The 9:15 a.m. Men's 8K was a run-a-way win for William Carey All-American Geoffrey Kipchumba, as he took the individual men's championship in a time of 25:12, but hot on his heels was Dalton State Freshman Ryan Gebelein and Sophomore Cole Thornton.  Gebelein would go on to finish in 4th place, with Thornton placing 6th to give Dalton State two runners in the top 10.

Devin Swafford (15th), David Murrillo (16th), and Saddoth Fraire (18th) rounded out scoring for the Roadrunners.  Dalton State's team total of 54 points placed them in 2nd overall behind champion Bethel University.

Dalton State and other Southern States Athletic Conference teams will see this course again on November 4th, when Grove Level North Park host the SSAC Cross Country Championships.  Admission is free, and the community is welcome to come out to cheer on the Roadrunners.  Race times will be 8:00 a.m. for the Women's 5K and 9:15 a.m. for the Men's 8K.
