Men's Soccer To Play For SSAC Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Dalton State men's soccer team will play for the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship after a thrilling 3-2 win over Faulkner at Emory Folmar YMCA in Montgomery, AL on Wednesday night.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead 8 minutes into the game when Daniel Valenciano got free in front of the net on a Santiago Moore corner kick.  Dalton State would strike again in the 14th minute when Justice Nmeregini knocked a loose ball in the top left corner of the net.

In the 27th minute Faulkner senior Medhi Himmich received a red card scrambling for a loose ball with Dalton State goalkeeper Diego Gonzales, forcing the Eagles to play the rest of the game with ten men.  The Roadrunners would control the rest of the half and go into the break up 2-0.

Faulkner turned up the intensity in the second half.  The Eagles would get on the board in the 55th minute when Costa Whitehead hit a cross into the box that Evens Alcide put by Diego Gonzales after a tussle for possession.  Faulkner would add the equalizer in the 73rd minute when Mateus Cesar fired a shot from 20 yards out that slipped past the outstretched arms of Gonzales.

Just when it looked like Dalton State was on its heels, the Roadrunners took the lead again when Rury Alvarez connected on a cross from Santiago Moore.  Dalton State would hold Faulkner at bay for the final 10 minutes and punch their ticket to the finals.

"We are excited to be in the finals against William Carey," said DS coach Kerem Daser.  "It should be a great final and we will give it our best effort."

Dalton State will be in action again on Friday, November 11 when they face #1-seed William Carey in the finals of the SSAC Championships at Emory Folmar YMCA in Montgomery, AL.
