CONVERSE, Ind. – Dalton State opened the 2026 men's soccer season with a narrow 1-0 loss to #19 Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday in Converse, Ind. The teams finished level with nine shots apiece, but a penalty-kick goal from Yarek Carnegie in the 40th minute proved to be the difference.

Dalton State placed two attempts on goal and kept the Wildcats scoreless throughout the second half. Goalkeeper Bernardo Manzano played all 90 minutes and recorded one save in his first decision of the season.

FIRST HALF
The Roadrunners applied pressure almost immediately. Jesus Huitanda forced Indiana Wesleyan goalkeeper Kadin Wolfe into a save just 41 seconds after kickoff before sending another attempt wide left in the seventh minute. Jason Guerrero-Blanco registered Dalton State's second shot on goal at the 22:41 mark, but Kadin Wolfe again made the stop.

Dalton State continued to create opportunities through its reserves. Jake Coltart had an attempt blocked in the 31st minute and later fired high following a Roadrunner corner. The Wildcats broke through at 39:27 when Yarek Carnegie converted a penalty kick for the only goal of the match.

The Roadrunners held a 5-4 advantage in first-half shots and matched Indiana Wesleyan with one corner kick, but entered halftime trailing 1-0.

SECOND HALF
Dalton State continued searching for an equalizer after the break. Nicolas Cuna sent an attempt high in the 58th minute, and Alex Santillian followed with another shot after a corner kick taken by Jesus Huitanda in the 63rd minute.

Bernardo Manzano helped preserve the one-goal margin with a save against Jose Garcia at 66:49. Dalton State then produced another dangerous look in the 72nd minute when Jason Guerrero-Blanco directed a header wide left.

The Roadrunners made a final push during the closing stages, with Joao Victor sending the team's last recorded attempt high in the 85th minute. Indiana Wesleyan protected the lead through the final whistle to secure the 1-0 result.
