Pettus Pours In 31 As Roadrunners Take Sole Ownership Of First Place In The SSAC East

MT. VERNON, Ga. – Qualen Pettus scored a game-high 31 points and Dalton State used a blistering second half to turn a one-point halftime edge into an 81–68 road win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) on Monday night in Mt. Vernon. The victory moves the Roadrunners to 18–8 overall and 11–5 in league play, while the Barons drop to 18–9 and 10–7. With the win, the Birds assume the solo top spot in the SSAC East standings and hold the season tiebreaker over second place, Life (Ga.), 2-0.

RECAP
FIRST HALF
Dalton State edged in front late and took a 36–35 lead to the locker room after a tightly contested opening 20 minutes that featured five ties and five lead changes.

Ja'Ron Briggs canned a pair of threes in the period, including a key triple with 1:35 left to make it 34–30 before Brewton-Parker closed with three free throws in the final seven seconds.

Pettus paced the Roadrunners early with 12 first-half points, and Omarion Smith added seven as DS shot 38.5% before the break.

The Barons were led by Abraham Garjah (8 first-half points) and Bobby Blackwell III (8), staying close despite hitting just 1-for-7 from deep in the half.

SECOND HALF
Brewton-Parker briefly surged ahead 39–36 on back-to-back plays from Tommy J. Tisdale III and Gil Gonzalez, but the Roadrunners answered immediately. Varun Danak's dunk at 16:55 put DS back on top 40–39, and the visitors never trailed again.

Raylan Barrion's corner three at 15:17 stretched the margin to 43–40, and a Pettus triple at 14:43 made it 46–40 as the Roadrunners began to separate.

Dalton State's best basketball came down the stretch: a 15–6 run punctuated by another Pettus trey at 5:45 pushed the lead to 63–51, and DS ultimately built its largest advantage, 13 points, with 31 seconds remaining.

The Roadrunners shot a scorching 58.3% from the floor after halftime and sealed it at the stripe, going 14-of-18 in the period as Barrion and Kyoya Sasaki combined to hit six in the final 35 seconds.
