#1 Dalton State Battles to 2-2 Draw Against Thomas in Home Thriller


DALTON, Ga. — Dalton State, the nation's top-ranked team, faced a fierce challenge at Dalton Stadium on Sunday, settling for a 2-2 draw against Thomas (Ga.) in a match filled with momentum swings and standout performances. Despite controlling stretches of play, the Roadrunners couldn't find a late winner as both sides shared the spoils.
 
FIRST HALF
The opening 45 minutes delivered fireworks early. Thomas struck first in the 21st minute when Diego Saenz converted off a feed from Zach Abraham, putting the visitors ahead 1-0. Dalton State responded quickly, leveling the score just two minutes later through Lucas Hanchar, assisted by David Saldana.
 
The Roadrunners seized the lead in the 27th minute when Sergej Misic finished a well-worked sequence involving Hanchar and Jesus Huitanda, sending the home crowd into celebration. Dalton State entered halftime up 2-1, buoyed by Misic's attacking spark and strong midfield control.
 
SECOND HALF
The second half saw Thomas ramp up the pressure, outshooting Dalton State 17-5 after the break. Roadrunner goalkeeper Nestor Mendez was sensational, recording six saves to keep his side ahead.
 
However, persistence paid off for Thomas in the 79th minute when Aaron Sindhar buried an unassisted strike after a brilliant Mendez save bounced back into play to tie the game at 2-2. Despite late chances for both teams—including a flurry of Thomas corners and a Misic effort in the 87th minute—the scoreline held, marking Dalton State's third draw of the season.
