(RV) Roadrunners Stay Undefeated In SSAC Play With Win Over UT Southern (Tenn.)


DALTON, Ga. – (RV) Dalton State moved their winning streak to 10 games with a 75-62 win over UT Southern (Tenn.) in SSAC men's basketball action at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Monday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State was quick out of the gate with a three-ball from Antonio Lewis and two buckets from Matt Compas and Omarion Smith to get a 7-0 advantage.
  • UT Southern answered with five quick points, but DS built the lead back up to seven points at 14-7 just over five minutes in.
  • A quick run from the FireHawks made it a two-point lead for the Roadrunners, and all the Birds did was respond with Lewis, Compas and Kyoya Sasaki scoring as the score stood at 20-12 at the halfway mark of the period.
  • The lead grew to 10 points, then 12 points with more work from Compas and Smith.
  • Bradin Smith hit a trey for UTS to make it a 6-point game before the Birds closed the half with six straight points of their own and carried a 38-26 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Kevin Henry hit an and-1 play to extend the lead to 14 points (42-28) just under three minutes into the second period.
  • Gradually, the lead grew to 21 points (60-39) as it looked like the Birds were in complete control with 7:11 remaining in the game.
  • The FireHawks never gave in and went on a 19-9 spurt over the next five minutes to get within 11 points with 2:11 on the clock.
  • DS did what needed to be done down the stretch and prevailed with a 75-62 win to remain unbeaten in conference play.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (12-2 overall, 6-0 SSAC) with the win, while UT Southern (Tenn.) to (5-9 overall, 3-4 SSAC) with the loss. Matt Compas led Dalton State and all scorers with 21 points and four rebounds. Omarion Smith was the other Roadrunner in double-figures with 18 points and nine boards.
 
Kawasiki Ricks, Kyoya Sasaki, and Antonio Lewis each had nine points. Ricks added three rebounds and six assists. Sasaki also had three boards to go along with four assists, while Lewis had two key offensive rebounds.
 
Three FireHawks scored in double-digits led by Zaiden Cross with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Mike Bell Jr. added 11 points, with Eric Robinson accounting for 10 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS took control of the game from the free throw line, where they went 22-of-27 (81.5%) compared to 7-of-10 (70%) for UTS. The Roadrunners won the paint and the glass, getting 38 points in the colored area, with the FireHawks managing 20. It was a 38-34 advantage in rebounding for Dalton State.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will continue the two-game homestand and the second of the Fill the Feeder games to help restock the Dalton State Birdfeeder for the upcoming Spring semester. The Birds will take on Faulkner (Ala.) on Thursday, January 6 at Bandy Gym. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
