(RV) Roadrunners Ground Eagles 104-81


DALTON, Ga. – (RV) Dalton State made it 11 consecutive wins using a big second-half surge to down a very good Faulkner (Ala.) squad 104-81 in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Faulkner was sharp from distance out of the box as Jonathan Garcia and Maliek Sadler carried the Eagles with four treys early, giving them an 18-11 lead and forcing a Dalton State timeout at the 13:22 mark.
  • Out of the timeout, Antonio Lewis and Qualen Pettus went to work with a 10-0 run by themselves over the next three minutes to give the Birds a 23-18 lead.
  • The Eagles stayed tight, gradually chipping away and finally tied the game at 28-28 after a Garcia three-pointer with 6:41 until halftime.
  • Defense started to show its teeth in the final minutes of the first half and Dalton State turned the intensity back up with stop after stop and hit a 14-4 spurt offensively to make it a 42-32 game with 3:53 remaining.
  • Pettus and Lewis stayed hot from deep as they each hit a three-ball to keep a double-digit lead and go into halftime up 51-40.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The lead maintained in the early parts of the second period, but Faulkner continued to make slow gains, closing the deficit to four points (64-60) with 12:31 left in regulation.
  • Kevin Henry and Kyoya Sasaki jump-started the next Roadrunner run with three-pointers as the lead grew to 13 points (73-60) just past the halfway point of the period.
  • Kawasiki Ricks continued to dish out dimes, getting Matt Compas heavily involved, making it a 17-point game at 88-71 with 4:49 on the clock.
  • Ricks gave the Bird their largest lead of the game, 25 points, at the 2:02 mark after hitting 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to make the score 100-75.
  • Sasaki and Pettus put the stamp on the win with a pair of buckets as the Birds downed the Eagles, 104-81.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (13-2 overall, 7-0 SSAC) with the win, while UT Southern (Ala.) falls to (12-4 overall, 3-2 SSAC) with the loss. While others scored more points, the biggest game came from Kawasiki Ricks. Ricks came four rebounds shy of the first triple-double in DS history with 11 points, six boards, and 10 assists.
 
Six total Roadrunners scored in double-figures, including Ricks. Matt Compas led all scorers with 26 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Qualen Pettus had 20 points, with Antonio Lewis pouring in 17 points. Varun Danak and Kyoya Sasaki each contributed 10 points.
 
Maliek Sadler was hot from the field for Faulkner in the first half and led the Eagles with 25 points and eight rebounds. KJ Rogers scored 16 points with six assists. Jonathan Garcia netted 13 points, with Jeffrey Selden getting 10.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS was exceptional in all phases, shooting 62.3% (38-for-61) from the field, forcing 13 turnovers, and scoring 24 points off the giveaways. Almost half of their point total was from the paint as they outscored Faulkner 50-34. In the process, the Birds assisted on 32 of their 38 baskets, setting a program record for most assists in a game.
 
Defensively, the Roadrunners held the Eagles to 40.8% shooting from the field overall including 36.8% in the second half. Faulkner also went 0-for-9 from distance in the second period after hitting seven treys in the first half.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will continue the two-game homestand and the second of the Fill the Feeder games to help restock the Dalton State Birdfeeder for the upcoming Spring semester. The Birds will take on Faulkner (Ala.) on Thursday, January 6 at Bandy Gym. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
