(RV) Roadrunners Bust Century Mark In Win At Tennessee Wesleyan


ATHENS, Tenn. – Dalton State kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second half and pulled away after a tight first half, avenging an early season loss with a 101-76 drubbing of Tennessee Wesleyan at James L. Robb Gymnasium in Athens, Tenn. on Friday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Tennessee Wesleyan made it an early 5-0 lead, but the Roadrunner stormed back to take an 8-7 lead just under three minutes in.
  • TWU took the lead back and held it for much of the first part of the period until Tyshan Kelley sparked a 10-0 run to give the Birds a 32-25 advantage with 8:38 until halftime.
  • DS worked into a flow and made it a nine-point lead with 4:07 on the clock after buckets from Antonio Lewis, Qualen Pettus, and Kyoya Sasaki.
  • The Bulldogs continued to work late in the period as they quickly trimmed the Roadrunner lead to four points with 1:10 to go.
  • Armando Cuardado hit one of two free throws for TWU in the last seconds to cap a 6-0 run to end the half to make it a 47-46 game in favor of the Roadrunners at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Dalton State started cooking early in the second half as they began the period with a 24-4 run to gain control with a 20-point lead (71-51) at the 12:34 mark.
  • DS continued to pour it on as the lead grew to 24 points (80-56) after a Lewis layup with 9:02 remaining.
  • The Roadrunner D was smothering at times and held the Bulldogs in check down the stretch.
  • Pettus nailed a trey with under a minute to go to eclipse the century mark as Dalton State left Athens with a 101-76 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (11-2 overall, 5-0 SSAC) with the win, while Tennessee Wesleyan falls to (3-8 overall, 2-4 AAC) with the loss. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures, led by Antonio Lewis with 25 points, including 5-of-8 from long distance.
 
Qualen Pettus added 23 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Matt Compas continued his great week of play with 14 points and six rebounds, while the backcourt of Kawasiki Ricks and Kyoya Sasaki combined for 22 points, six rebounds, and five dimes.
 
Ty Hurst led the Bulldogs with 13 points and seven rebounds. Reshaun Hampton contributed 12 points and seven boards in the losing effort. Jay Reed and Charles Neverdon each had 11 points and combined for five rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS got after it offensively, shooting at a 53.5% (38-for-71) clip from the field for the game and 56.5% (13-for-23) from behind the arc. Defensively, the Birds forced 13 turnovers and turned those into 26 points on the other end.
 
On the glass, Dalton State held a 42-33 advantage and out-scored Tennessee Wesleyan 30-16 in the paint. In the second half, the Bulldogs shot 29% from the field and knocked down one three-pointer.

UP NEXT
Dalton State returns home for a two-game stretch that will be the annual Fill The Feeder games to help restock the Dalton State Birdfeeder for the upcoming Spring semester. The homestand begins on Monday, January 6, when UT Southern (Tenn.) comes to Bandy. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
