Roadrunners Edge Knights By Two

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State withstood a late surge from Middle Georgia State and stayed undefeated in conference play after an 80-78 win over the Knights at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Friday night.

THE FIRST HALF
  • Antonio Lewis, Kawasiki Ricks, and Omarion Smith led a strong start with a three-pointer and two buckets, respectively as Dalton State took a quick 7-2 lead less than two minutes in.
  • David Gainous hit a basket for the Knights to trim the lead to one point at 9-8, but Matt Compas and Kyoya Sasaki got in on the act as part of a 10-2 run to make it a 19-10 game at the 13:48 mark.
  • MGA continued to hang around and cut the Roadrunner lead to 4 points shortly after until DS gradually re-extended the lead and built it to as much as 14 points after a Qualen Pettus layup with 4:24 left in the half.
  • The Knights battled back to within six points with 1:41 on the clock, but the Roadrunners got the lead back to nine points (50-41) and carried that lead into the half.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Dalton State tried but never could seem to put Middle Georgia away as the lead floated between seven and 11 points for much of the half.
  • Things began to get interesting at 7:40 when Middle Georgia cut the deficit to 3 points at 68-65.
  • Both squads made scoring difficult for the other as the teams combined for 19 points over the next six minutes of play.
  • A Trashawn Wilson three-ball made it a 78-77 game in favor of Dalton State with 47 seconds left.
  • DS turned the ball over on an inbound pass following a timeout with 16 ticks left that sent David Gainous to the line, where he hit one of two shots to tie the game at 78-78.
  • Looking for the last shot, Compas drove the lane and missed, but Sasaki was there to clean up and draw a foul.
  • Sasaki hit both shots, and the Roadrunner D held tight for the final two seconds to finish off an 80-78 win.
