Antonio Lewis Hits Finger Roll With Two Seconds Left As Birds Hang On In A Nailbiter

DALTON, Ga. – It was another nailbiter for the Roadrunners, with Antonio Lewis providing the heroics by way of a layup with 2 seconds left to give Dalton State a 76-74 road win over William Carey (Miss.) at Clinton Gym in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Tuesday evening.

THE FIRST HALF
  • The first two baskets of the game went to Omarion Smith and Matt Compas, but two straight field goals, including a three-ball from Cam Smith gave Carey the early 5-4 lead just short of three minutes in.
  • A quick 8-0 run keyed by Compas and Kawasiki Ricks saw the Birds take a 12-5 lead shortly after.
  • William Carey battled back to within two points on two occasions, but an Antonio Lewis trey at the 4:54 mark made the score 31-22 in favor of the Roadrunners.
  • Varun Danak threw a dunk down with 1:14 to go followed by two Lewis free throws to end the half and give Dalton State a 40-31 halftime lead.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Carey opened the second period with an Ashton Campbell trey and began to chip away at the lead before taking a three-point advantage at 51-48 with 14:44 to play.
  • Dalton State answered the call with a 12-2 run that saw Kevin Henry and Qualen Pettus go to work on the Crusader D to go up 60-53 with 9:49 remaining.
  • Pettus, Lewis, and Henry continued to carry the Roadrunners in the stretch run as DS built a 10-point lead (70-60) with 5:09 on the clock.
  • Seven of the next nine points for the Crusaders came from the free throw line as they cut the deficit down to three points (74-71) with 1:44 to go.
  • Two late turnovers from the Birds gave Carey a chance, and they capitalized as Brown nailed a three-ball with 31 seconds left to tie the game at 74-74.
  • DS went to work following the bucket, running the clock down before Lewis took advantage of an opening in the lane, driving hard for a finger roll layup with two seconds left and a 76-74 lead.
  • Dylan Brumfield had one final chance but his three-point attempt hit side iron as the Roadrunners held on for the win.
