Roadrunners Cruise To 28-Point Win Over Oakwood (Ala.)

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead and never trailed as stout defense turned into multiple fastbreak opportunities in a 97-69 thrashing of Oakwood (Ala.) at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Monday night.

THE FIRST HALF
  • Oakwood missed three early three-pointers, but Antonio Lewis did not as he knocked down his first two attempts from deep with Kawasiki Ricks adding a bucket to give the Birds an early 8-0 lead just short of five minutes in.
  • A little over three minutes later, a Jeray Randall three-ball tied the game at 8-8 for Oakwood.
  • How did the Birds respond? With a 20-0 run over the next 5+ minutes with Qualen Pettus, Kevin Henry, Omarion Smith, and Matt Compas all getting in on the scoring act to make the score 28-8 with 6:54 remaining in the half.
  • The Ambassadors cut the Roadrunner lead down to 17 points (35-18) with 2:49 on the clock, but another large run, this time a 14-0 spurt with Tyshan Kelley hitting two three-balls, and Kyoya Sasaki and Carterius Evans making an impact sent the Birds into halftime with a 49-18 lead.
THE SECOND HALF
  • OU managed to stabilize the deficit for a short time only to see Compas reel off three-straight points to kickstart a 15-0 drive with Henry, Lewis, Evan, and Varun Danak snagging baskets to make the score 70-29 just shy of the mid-way point of the half.
  • Henry hit three consecutive free throws at the 10:51 mark to give the Roadrunners their largest lead of the game at 44 points (75-31).
  • Once Coach Ireland called the dogs off, the Ambassadors managed to hit three-pointers and collect some baskets to make the score respectable with the Roadrunners taking the victory, 97-69, in front of a packed Bandy Gym.
