Bird Suffer First Loss Of Season To Tennessee Wesleyan


PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Roadrunners had solid production offensively, but a hot shooting Tennessee Wesleyan was just a little better as the Bulldogs handed the Birds their first loss of the season in a 92-78 defeat in the first game of the Pikeville Classic at UPike Gym in Pikeville, Ky. on Friday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Kawasiki Ricks got the game off to a good start with a three-ball, but the Bulldogs came out of the gate with three-straight treys of their own as the game stayed tight four minutes in with an 11-11 tie.
  • The Bulldogs hit an 8-0 spurt over the next 3 minutes to take a 19-11 lead.
  • Matt Compas and Kevin Henry did work along with some help from Carterius Evans to make it a 3-point game at 28-25 with 6:31 left in the half.
  • TW answered back with a 13-4 run to make the deficit 12 points for the Birds (41-29) with 2:18 on the clock.
  • Omarion Smith got the last score of the half with the Roadrunners going into the break trailing 43-32.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Bulldogs came out of halftime hot and quickly got their lead up to 19 points at 53-34 after yet another barrage of three-pointers.
  • Smith continued to work down low and got help from Antonio Lewis with a key three ball as part of a 9-0 run to cut into the Tennessee Wesleyan lead and make it a 10-point game (53-43) at the 16:04 mark.
  • After some ebbs and flows, the Birds cut the deficit further after a Carterius Evans bucket at the midway point to make the score 66-59.
  • Tennessee Wesleyan quickly snapped back and kept the lead in double-digits getting it to 18 points (90-72) with 2:40 remaining.
  • Dalton State made is closer but it was a 92-78 win for TW in the end.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (2-1 overall) with the loss, while Tennessee Wesleyan improves to (1-0 overall) with the win. Omarion Smith led four Roadrunners in double-figures with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Matt Compas continued his hot start to the season with 18 points and 6 boards. Antonio Lewis and Kevin Henry each had 12 points and combined for 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
 
Four Bulldogs scored in double-digits with three of those going for 20-plus. Peyton West led TW with 24 points hitting 7 three-pointers. Ty Hurst had 21 points, with Reshaun Hampton hitting 6 triples and accounting for 20 points. Amauri Young added 13 points and 7 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
It was one of those nights where you don't play bad, but it seems like everything falls for the other team as Tennessee Wesleyan went bonkers from long range nailing 16 three balls on 32 attempts for a 50% clip. In contrast, Dalton State hit just 4 triples on 14 attempts.
 
DS also committed 17 turnovers that TW turned into 31 points. Rebounds were even a 31 apiece and the Roadrunners outscored the Bulldogs 40-30 in the paint.
 
Overall, Dalton State shot a very respectable 51.9% (28-of-54) from the field, while Tennessee Wesleyan shot 51.4% (36-of-70).

Dalton State will hit the hardwood again tomorrow, November 9 as they stay in Pikeville for their second game of the Pikeville Classic where they will take on the host, (RV) Pikeville (Ky.). Tip-Off at UPike Gym is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
