#1 Roadrunners Solidify Top Billing With Win Over #12 Crusaders


DALTON, Ga. – #1-ranked Dalton State stayed undefeated but it wasn't without theatrics as Leonardo Seixas nailed a penalty kick home in the 85' to lift the Birds to a 2-1 win over #12 William Carey (Miss.) at Dalton Stadium on Sunday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
  • (1-0 DS) DS: Jip van den Essen put the Roadrunners on the board first when he kicked home a ball after a scrum in front of the net in the 10'.
SECOND HALF
  • (1-1 T) WC: Carey hit the equalizer just over a minute into the second half when Djordje Djukovic received a cross in the open field and went lower 90 for the score.
  • (2-1 DS) DS: After a tripping call in the box in the 85' Leonardo Seixas, stepped up for a PK and broke the tie on a contested kick that proved the difference in the match.
THE REST OF THE STORY
#1 Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (11-0-1 overall, 5-0-1 SSAC) on the season with the win, while #12 William Carey (Miss.) falls to (9-2-2 overall, 5-2-0 SSAC) with the loss. Leonardo Seixas scores his team-leading 7th goal of the year with Jip van den Essen collecting his 5th.
 
WC outshot DS 13-8 overall, but the Birds topped the Crusaders in shots on goal at 6-3. A tired defense proved their worth after a physical match two days prior and came through with a hard-fought victory.
 
UP NEXT
Senior Night is on deck next for the Roadrunners as they take on Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) on Wednesday, October 16th. Kickoff at Dalton Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
