Birds Score Big Road Win At Loyola

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Antonio Lewis hit 5-of-6 crucial free throws in the final seconds to solidify an important 89-82 SSAC road win against Loyola (La.) at The Den in New Orleans, La. on Wednesday night.

THE FIRST HALF
  • Both squads swapped the lead several times in the early minutes until Loyola took a 6-point lead (14-9) following a 6-0 run with 14:10 left in the half.
  • DS answered back with an 8-0 run of their own capped by a 3-point play from Matt Compas to re-take the lead (17-14) just under two minutes later.
  • Qualen Pettus, Antonio Lewis, and Allon Johnson helped increase the lead to 8 points (32-24) with 8:24 remaining in the period.
  • The lead stayed with the Birds until the final minutes of the half when Milan Mejia keyed a 13-5 run to close the half and send the Wolf Pack into the lead (47-46) as the halftime buzzer sounded.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Franklin Almonte gave the Roadrunners a 1-point lead (54-53) with 17:26 remaining in regulation.
  • Loyola briefly re-took the lead before DS scored five-straight points to take a 59-55 lead with 13:51 on the clock.
  • Gradually, the lead extended with buckets by Pettus, Johnson, and Harrison Eghan.
  • A trey from Lewis at the 3:35 mark gave the Birds a 10-point lead at 79-69, their largest lead of the night.
  • The Wolf Pack gave one final effort and closed the margin to 2 points with 24 ticks on the clock, but a critical sequence that began with Lewis going 1-for-2 from the free-throw line turned into a technical foul on Loyola's Troy Thomas following the miss and lead to four-straight makes at the line by Lewis that iced an 89-82 Roadrunner win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (8-6 overall, 4-3 SSAC) with the win, while Loyola (La.) falls to (4-9 overall, 3-3 SSAC) with the loss. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures with two more just missing double-digits. Donavan Miller and Franklin Almonte each had 15 points, with Almonte getting the double-double with 10 rebounds. Miller added 5 assists drawing himself closer to the all-time assist mark at Dalton State.

Matt Compas added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while Qualen Pettus had 12 points, and 6 boards. Antonio Lewis scored 11 points and iced the game late going 5-for-6 from the line. Harrison Eghan and Allon Johnson each had 9 points, with Eghan adding 9 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds found a way to win a game where the statistics showed otherwise. Dalton State was outrebounded (44-39), made fewer field goals (32-28), made fewer three-pointers (11-10), and trailed at the half (47-46).  This season, they have often controlled these categories only to take a loss, but tonight was different.

DS scored 19 second-chance points from 12 offensive rebounds and managed to get to the free-throw line 35 times, converting 23. In contrast, Loyola took just 11 shots from the charity stripe, making 11. It proved to be the difference in the game.
