Roadrunners End Losing Streak To Faulkner With Big Home Win


DALTON, Ga. – After a slow start, the Birds got hot from the field and broke an 8-game losing streak with a 95-87 win over Faulkner (Ala.) in SSAC action at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Nothing fell early for the Roadrunners, who found themselves trailing 8-0 four minutes into the game.
  • After a timeout to re-group, DS hit another gear with a 9-0 lead to take a 9-8 lead.
  • Faulkner kept it close and tied the game at 14-14 just past the halfway mark.
  • Carterius Evans, Kawasiki Ricks, and Matt Compas got things rolling as Dalton State grabbed the lead and stretched out an 8-point lead (26-18) with 4:59 to go until halftime.
  • Franklin Almonte got the lead to 10 points (32-22) with just over a minute remaining, but Victor Munoz got a basket before the buzzer as the Roadrunners took a 32-24 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Three-pointers from Almonte and Harrison Eghan help Dalton State build a 15-point advantage (44-29) three minutes into the half.
  • Back-to-back treys from Jayden Cooper and Jonathan Garcia kept Faulkner in the game as they trailed by 8 points (49-41) with 14:51 on the clock.
  • The Roadrunners followed with a 23-7 run to take what they thought would be control of the game as the score stood at 72-48 with 8:18 left in the contest.
  • DS increased the lead to 26 points (81-55) with 6:01 remaining, but the Eagles refused to lay down.
  • Faulkner got hot from distance going on a 22-2 run to close the gap to 6 points (83-77) with 1:35 to play.
  • An Achillies heel for the Roadrunners has been foul shooting, where DS sits at the bottom of the league, but their fortunes changed on Saturday as they went 10-for-10 down the stretch to close the game out and take a 95-87 victory.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (9-6 overall, 5-3 SSAC) with the win, while Faulkner (Ala.) falls to (8-8 overall, 3-5 SSAC) with the loss. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures with Donavan Miller and Ellis Lee leading with 18 points each. Lee hit 5-of-7 shots from behind the arc and went 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Miller added 8 assists and is now 16 shy of breaking the career-record.
 
Harrison Eghan just missed a double-double with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Franklin Almonte had 13 points and 8 boards, while Matt Compas added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
 
Freshman Jayden Cooper led Faulkner and all scorers with a career-high 39 points in 40 minutes of action. Cooper carried the Eagles in the second half with 30 of his 39 coming in the period. Victor Munoz had a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, with Jonathan Garcia also adding 20 points and 5 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
After a first half that saw the teams combine for 56 points, each team scored 63 in the second half. Points in the paint were even at 36-36, with the Birds holding the advantage on the glass, 38-31.
 
DS was solid from the charity strip hitting 14-of-16 on the day. Each team hit 11 triples. Dalton State did so on just 19 attempts, while Faulkner attempted 34 shots from distance.

The Roadrunners hit the road for two-straight beginning with a mid-week game against Stillman (Ala.) in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Wednesday, January 10. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT) at Birthright Alumni Hall.
