Birds Avenge Earlier Loss To Split Season Series With William Carey (Miss.)


DALTON, Ga. – Franklin Almonte provided a huge spark off the bench, notching a huge double-double and blocking 5 shots as the Roadrunners avenged an earlier loss to William Carey (Miss.) with a 71-67 win at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Saturday.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Neither team established offensive consistency early, but Harrison Eghan, Matt Compas, and Donavan Miller grabbed buckets to help the Birds to an 11-6 lead with 12:57 left in the period.
  • Carey battled back and took a 16-14 lead at the 10:30 mark after an Ashton Campbell three-ball capped a 10-3 run.
  • The lead swapped hands twice more with three ties before a Miller three-pointer gave the Roadrunners a 30-27 lead with 42 ticks before the half.
  • A bucket from each team ended the first period, with DS carrying a 32-29 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Miller and Carterius Evans scored the first four points of the second half as the Birds took a 7-point lead (36-29).
  • Two free throws from Kolby Moore cut the Roadrunner lead to 3 points (40-37), but Franklin Almonte hit a jumper in the lane, then Miller downed another three-pointer to hike the lead back to 7 points with 12:30 remaining.
  • The three-pointer by Miller kickstarted a 9-0 run for the Birds that extended the lead to 13 points (51-38) just shy of the halfway mark of the half.
  • An 8-1 run from Carey followed to cut the lead to 6 points (52-46) with 8:22 on the clock.
  • Solid defensive play and baskets from Almonte and Compas held maintain the lead in the 5-7 point range for the next four minutes.
  • William Carey slashed the lead to 3 points on two occasions down the stretch, but conversions from the charity stripe saw the Roadrunners keep the lead and hold on for a 71-67 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (11-7 overall, 7-4 SSAC) with the win, while William Carey (Miss.) falls to (12-6 overall, 7-4 SSAC) with the loss. Franklin Almonte led 5 Roadrunners in double-figures with 15 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 2 assists. Matt Compas has some big buckets late on his way to 14 points and 8 rebounds.
 
Donavan Miller nailed 2 of the Birds 3 treys and accounted for 12 points, 3 boards, and 3 assists. Harrison Eghan had 11 points and 7 rebounds, with Allon Johnson adding 10 points and 5 rebounds.
 
Ashton Campbell led William Carey with 15 points, connecting on 3 three-pointers. The Crusader's leading scorer, Dylan Brumfield, was held in check for most of the game, getting 5 late points to total 14 with 5 assists. Kaeden Laws was the last Carey player in double-digits with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS was up and ready for this matchup, and it was obvious as they controlled the paint early and kept it going late, outrebounding the Crusaders 44-35 and outscoring them in the lane 38-26. A stout defensive battle saw both squads shoot sub-40 %, with the Roadrunners at 38.3% (23-for-60) and the Crusaders at 33.3% (24-for-72).
 
Most of the field goal percentage woes were due to poor three-point shooting on both sides. They combined to make 10 three-pointers total, with William Carey knocking down 7 and Dalton State 3. WC took 32 attempts, while DS hauled up 24 shots from deep.

UP NEXT
Tuesday's game at Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) has been postponed due to ongoing issues with the weather and will be made up on Tuesday, February 20. The focus for the Birds will now turn to Point (Ga.) as they travel to West Point on Saturday, January 27, to take on the Skyhawks. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
