Birds Bounce Back With Clutch Road Win At William Carey


HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Jaelin Ferrell's 16 points as Dalton State bounced back from a loss on Thursday and split the season series with William Carey (Miss.) with an 80-71 win over the Crusaders at Clinton Gym in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Baskets were hard to come by in the first 4 minutes but Jaelin Ferrell gave the Birds the early 6-4 lead after a trey at the 16:37 mark.
  • DS began to gradually stretch the lead out and got it to 13 points (20-7) after a Donavan Miller three with 12:00 left in the half.
  • Layups from Boubacar Kamissoko and Jalen Barker stretched the lead out to 16 points (30-14) with just over 8 minutes on the clock.
  • Brad Milliorn nailed a three-ball and Carterius Evans collected two layups as the Roadrunners built the lead to 20 points (39-19).
  • Ferrell buried another trey and Kamissoko hit another layup in the final seconds as the Birds carried a 44-23 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • It was a hot start to the second half for Dalton State as they began with a 10-2 run to take a 29-point lead (54-29).
  • Carey began to play better as the Roadrunners missed shots on the offensive end, but DS continued to carry a 20-point lead (60-40) with 8:58 left in regulation.
  • With 5:54 to go, the Roadrunner lead stood at 21 points (65-44) after a Milliorn trey, but Carey would not roll over.
  • Earl Smith put the Crusaders on his back and reeled off 11 points in a 14-2 Carey run to cut the deficit to 9 points (67-58) with 3:04 left to play.
  • Ferrell would come up big when the Birds needed him nailing a 3-pointer with 1:59 to go to stop the bleeding.
  • Down the stretch, the Roadrunners hit their foul shots to maintain a comfortable advantage on their way to an 80-71 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (15-9 overall, 10-6 SSAC) with the win, while William Carey (Miss.) falls to (7-17 overall, 3-13 SSAC) with the loss. Jaelin Ferrell got the Birds back in the swing from distance going 4-of-8 from 3-point range and logging 16 points. Carterius Evans had 15 points and 8 rebounds, with Donavan Miller netting 14 points, and 5 assists.
 
Boubacar Kamissoko was the fourth Dalton State player in double-figures with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Sean Cobb once again narrowly missed out on a double-double scoring 9 points but pulling 13 shots off the glass.
 
Earl Smith tried to single-handedly pull the Crusaders back with 26 points overall and 15 points in the final 9 minutes of play. Kolby Moore tied to match Smith with 11 points in the last 4 minutes including 3 three-pointers.
 
Smith got the double-double with 13 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Moore had 13 points overall. Emile Kazeneza had 12 points with 8 rebounds, while Arturro Bingham 12 points before fouling out.

BY THE NUMBERS
In a matchup that is usually decided on the glass, the Roadrunners held the advantage, 44-39. That edge allowed the Birds to dominate points in the paint, 34-18. Overall for the game, DS shot 50.9% (29-for-57) from the field while holding WC to 34.2% (25-for-73).
 
William Carey pulled down 16 of their 39 rebounds on the offensive end but only got 11 second chance points on the opportunities. Dalton State only got 9 boards on the offensive end but were more efficient with 10 second chance points.

UP NEXT
The Birds will be back in the friendly confines of Mashburn Arena next week when they host their final two games of the season. The weekend action starts on Thursday, February 9 when Brewton-Parker (Ga.) comes to Dalton. Tip-Off against the Barons is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
