Barons Upend Roadrunners


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State got their last homestand of the season off to a rocky start on Thursday falling to Brewton-Parker (Ga.), 69-60, in SSAC action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • BP controlled the game early, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of play.
  • Dalton State clawed back to tie it at 9-9 after a Jaelin Ferrell trey with 13:22 left in the first half.
  • The Barons drew the lead back out to 7 points (18-11), but the Roadrunners responded with a 12-3 run capped by a Franklin Almonte three-ball to take a 23-21 lead with just over 5 minutes to go in the period.
  • Emmanuel Hit a three-pointer with 4:13 on the clock to kick start a 16-5 run for Brewton-Parker to close the half as they carried a 37-28 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Lance Smith and Grant Sanders got the first 4 points of the half for the Barons as they extended their lead to double-digits.
  • A response from the Birds was needed and they got it with a 13-2 spurt to close within 2 points at 43-41 with 15:34 left in regulation.
  • DS kept it close and finally snagged a 2-point lead (47-45) just shy of the halfway mark in the period after an Almonte jumper in the paint.
  • Kenny Colwell nailed a three-ball next trip down court to give the Barons back the lead, one they wouldn't surrender.
  • The Roadrunners kept the game within striking distance, but they couldn't get over the hump as the Barons answered the call every time the Birds tried to gain control as BP held on for a 69-60 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (15-10 overall, 10-7 SSAC) with the loss, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) improves to (6-19 overall, 4-13 SSAC) with the win. Carterius Evans led Dalton State with 15 points but was quiet on the boards pulling down 2 on the night.
 
Sean Cobb recorded another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Franklin Almonte had 14 points and 9 boards. The backcourt of Jaelin Ferrell, Boubacar Kamissoko, and Donavan Miller accounted for 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
 
Four Barons scored in double-figures led by Lance Smith with a game-high 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Grant Sanders had 14 points and 8 rebounds, with Emmanuel Green adding 12 points and 6 assists. Jordan Johnson was the last Baron in double-digits with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
Both squads took care of the ball with just 11 combined turnovers, but the Barons did a better job capitalizing off turnovers scoring 11 points versus 5 for the Roadrunners. Dalton State scored more points in the paint at 30-23 while Brewton-Parker hit 7 threes compared to 5 for DS.
 
The rebounding edge surprisingly went to BP 42-39 with 12 of the Barons boards coming on the offensive end which led to 6 second chance points. The Roadrunners managed just 3 second chance points off 7 offensive rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Roadrunners will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Talladega (Ala.) on Senior Day at Mashburn Arena. Tip-Off against the Tornadoes is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
