Roadrunners Set Records In 110-95 Win Over Pikeville (Ky.)

DALTON, Ga. – It was a "businessman" special of sorts on Tuesday afternoon, and the Roadrunners took care of theirs, setting a new school record for points scored in a 110-95 win over visiting Pikeville (Ky.) in non-conference basketball action at Bandy Gym.

THE FIRST HALF
  • Donavan Miller made the first two buckets of the game as the Birds raced out to a 15-2 lead four minutes into the contest.
  • DS kept their foot on the gas pedal with baskets by Matt Compas, Harrison Eghan, Ellis Lee, and Carterius Evans, outscoring UPike 13-5 over the next 5 minutes to hold a 28-7 lead.
  • Qualen Pettus and Allon Johnson entered the game and helped extend the lead to 22 points at 38-16 with 7:47 remaining in the half.
  • Pikeville answered with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 12 points (40-28) with 5:30 on the clock.
  • Dalton State gradually pulled the lead back out and ended the half with a trey from Lee and a steal and breakaway dunk from Franklin Almonte to carry a 53-32 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Miller again opened the half with a bucket before Compas reeled off 8 of the next 11 points as the score stood at 67-44 with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.
  • Kawasiki Ricks was plagued by foul trouble on the day but made an impact as a floor general when on the court, dishing out several assists as the Birds pulled the lead out to 29 points (83-54) just past the halfway mark of the period.
  • Pikeville installed a full-court press following a timeout, which began to give the Birds problems and saw the Bears chew into the lead, getting it under 20 points (97-78) with just over 4 minutes left.
  • UPike whittled the lead down to 11 points (99-88) with 2:20 on the clock thanks to some timely three-point shots from Bradley Bunch.
  • The run came too late as the two top scorers of the day for the Bears fouled out, and the Roadrunners stalled the advance, winning 110-95.
