Roadrunners Drop Nail-Bitter To Running Eagles

DALTON, Ga. – The Roadrunners had the ball with a chance to win at the buzzer, but a final effort clanked off the iron as time expired with (RV) Life (Ga.) defeating Dalton State 77-76 in SSAC action at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
  • The game was back-and-forth in the early going, but buckets from Harrison Eghan, Ellis Lee, Franklin Almonte, and Donavan Miller helped the Roadrunners take a 4-point lead (13-9) at the 14:28 mark.
  • Life outscored Dalton State 7-2 over the next 3 minutes to take a 16-15 lead.
  • After three lead changes over the next 3 and a half minutes, Life gained an advantage and drew the lead out to 4 points (30-26) with just under 6 minutes remaining in the half.
  • Three more lead changes took place in the final minutes of the half, but two Matt Compas free throws proved the difference as the Birds took a 1-point lead (37-36) into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • DS kept the lead for the first 5+ minutes of the half and worked the lead out to 5 points (47-42).
  • A brief 7-2 run from the Running Eagles saw them tie the game at 49-49 before a Jaylen Broyles free throw gave them a brief lead.
  • Three more lead changes ensued, but Life caught a hot streak, which turned into an 8-point lead (67-59) with 6:21 left in regulation.
  • The Roadrunners responded with a 9-0 run to take a 1-point lead (68-67) with 4:02 on the clock.
  • Five more lead changes occurred down the stretch, with Life taking the lead last (77-76) with 5 seconds to go.
  • Franklin Almonte got a good look at a game-winning bucket but it would go off the iron as the Running Eagles held on for the win.

Harrison Eghan had 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Matt Compas just missed a double-double with 12 points and 9 boards. Antonio Lewis came off the bench with 11 important points to keep the Birds in striking distance.
