Coastal Georgia Uses Strong Second Half To Edge Roadrunners


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dalton State looked to be in control until midway through the second half when the Mariners went on a run to get back in the game and eventually come away with a 72-69 win over Dalton State on the first day of the SSAC/SUN Challenge at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a tight game early, but a 9-0 run from Coastal Georgia made it an 8-point game at 15-7 with 10:55 left in the first half.
  • DS tried to chip away at the lead, but it remained at 7 points (21-14) with 7:56 on the clock.
  • The Roadrunners then hit another gear, going on an 18-0 run started with six-straight points from Antonio Lewis and capped by a Dastin Hart three-pointer to give the Birds a 32-21 lead with 3:01 left to play.
  • Coastal Georgia cut the lead to 9 points, but the final five came from DS as they entered the half up 14 points (37-23).
THE SECOND HALF
  • CG managed to cut the lead to 8 points by the 11:10 mark, but Franklin Almonte answered back with a bucket to put the lead back in double-digits at 53-43 with 10:59 on the clock.
  • Efficient offense led to Coastal Georgia tying the game at 58-58 just under three minutes later.
  • The Mariners held the lead until 58 seconds remaining when Lewis hit a pair of free throws to give the Birds a 67-66 lead.
  • From there, the game was a battle of free throws that ended with a potential game-tying three from Donavan Miller, that missed the mark and ended in a 72-69 Coastal Georgia win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (1-2 overall) with the loss, while Coastal Georgia improves to (2-0 overall) with the win. Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Qualen Pettus with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Donavan Miller had 13 points and 3 assists, while Carterius Evans had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Antonio Lewis added 10 points and 3 boards.
 
Nic Jiles with 21 points before fouling out. Salle Wilson and Layton Veon ended the game in double-digits with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Wilson added 4 boards and Veon 3 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS held a clear edge in rebounds at 43-33, which included 14 on the offensive end. It would only amount to 15 second chance points. Points in the paint were even at 32-32, while CG turned 16 DS turnovers into 22 points. Bench points were to Dalton States' advantage at 43-13, showing the depth of the Roadrunners.

It's a short turnaround for the Birds as they play tomorrow night, November 3 against Keiser (Fla.). Tip-Off from the Cramton Bowl is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (CT).
