Miller's Heroics Lift Roadrunners To Win Over Keiser (Fla.)


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Day two of the SSAC/SUN Challenge was much better for the Roadrunners as Donavan Miller hit a layup with four seconds to go to give Dalton State a 71-70 win over Keiser (Fla.) at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. on Friday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State took control of the game early with a steady lead that grew to 9 points (19-10) after a Donavan Miller three-pointer with 10:09 left in the half.
  • A three-pointer from Harrison Eghan and a bucket from Antonio Lewis got the lead in double-digits at 10 (26-16) with 5:29 to go.
  • Carterius Evans, Kawasiki Ricks, and Ellis Lee got in on the party with buckets to extend the lead to 14 points (32-18) with 3:47 on the clock.
  • The lead stayed at 14 until the final minute when Justin Nichelson made two layups for the Seahawks to send the teams into halftime with Dalton State leading 36-26.
THE SECOND HALF
  • DS maintained a double-digit lead (48-34) thanks to 7 early points from Matt Compas.
  • Allon Johnson stole the ball and went coast-to-coast at the 9:35 mark to give the Birds a 15-point lead at 56-41.
  • Keiser answered with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to make it a ballgame again as the score sat at 56-53 with 6:24 left in regulation.
  • The Seahawks stayed within arm's reach and captured a 68-67 lead with 2:09 to go.
  • Eghan tipped-in a missed layup on the next possession to re-assume the lead.
  • After a sequence of plays that saw turnovers and missed shots from the field and foul line, KU's Nichelson hit a layup with 12 seconds left for a 70-69 lead.
  • Miller answered the call as he took the ball and drove the lane for the game-winner with 4 ticks remaining to give DS the 71-70 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (2-2 overall) with the win, while Keiser (Fla.) falls to (2-1 overall) with the loss. Matt Compas led three Roadrunners in double-figures with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Compas was clutch from the charity strip going 7-for-8 on the night.
 
Ellis Lee and Donavan Miller each had 14 points, with Lee hitting three triples and Miller dishing out 3 assists. Miller also hit the game-winner in the lane with just seconds on the clock.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State is proving to be a monster of a rebounding team collecting 40 on the night compared to 36 for Keiser. Neither squad did a good job of limiting second chance opportunities as the Roadrunners held a 20-19 advantage over the Seahawks on the offensive glass. It led to 25 points for KU and 21 for DS.
 
Points in the paint were even at 30-30, with Keiser holding the edge in points off turnovers at 16-12. The Birds suffered some woes from deep in the second half going 1-for-9 (11.1%) but hit 5-of-16 shots (31.3%) in the first period. In contrast, Keiser only hit 1-of-10 (10%) from distance in the first and 4-of-14 (28.6%) in the second.
