Birds Improve To 2-0 In SSAC Play With Win Over Newcomer Point (Ga.)


DALTON, Ga. – The Roadrunners jumped out to a big lead and cruised down the stretch with a 92-81 win over SSAC newcomer Point (Ga.) at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State hit a spurt with the game tied at 3-3 as a Matt Compas trey keyed a 12-3 run capped by a Franklin Almonte jumper to take a 10-point lead (15-5) seven and a half minutes into the contest.
  • The lead stabilized between 9 and 11 points until an Almonte three-ball started another run that saw the Roadrunners push the lead to 19 points at 40-21 with 4:03 left in the half.
  • Carterius Evans and Donavan Miller got in on the scoring act to maintain the double-digit lead going into halftime (47-31).
THE SECOND HALF
  • Point continued to hang around and keep DS honest as the lead stayed around 15 points through the first six minutes of play in the second half.
  • Eventually, Dalton State hit another gear backed by strong defense and buckets from Almonte, Compas, Qualen Pettus, Allon Johnson, and Harrison Eghan to extend the lead to 25 points (81-56) with 7:06 remaining in the game.
  • The Skyhawks began to make some movement on the scoreboard as the reserves hit the court for the Birds as they went on a 24-9 kick from the 7:07 mark until 50 seconds on the clock.
  • Dalton State was able to dribble out after making shots from the foul line and holding Point on a possession to collect a 92-81 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (4-2 overall, 2-0 SSAC) with the win, while Point (Ga.) falls to (5-3 overall, 0-2 SSAC) with the loss. Matt Compas led four Roadrunners and all scorers with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Carterius Evans added a nice stat line with 17 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, and 3 blocks on 8-of-10 shooting from the field.
 
Ellis Lee hit four shots from long range to contribute 14 points and 3 assists, while Franklin Almonte had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
 
Five Skyhawks scored in double-figures Robert Kendrick and Theron Montgomery with 13 points. Montgomery added 8 rebounds on the day. Kenton Steele and Justice Hayes had 11 points, with Myles MclCain adding 10 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS once again won the battle on the glass, 36-33, and dished out 21 assists as a team. They dominated points in the paint, 46-28, and blocked 8 shots. The Birds committed single-digit turnovers, which Point converted into only 10 points.

The Birds hit the road for a tough non-conference matchup as they head to Williamsburg, Ky. to take on (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday, November 21. Tip-Off from the O. Wayne Rollins Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
