Basketball Birds Fall On The Road To (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.)


WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Dalton State held some momentum heading into a non-conference matchup with Cumberlands (Ky.), but a hot shooting Patriots squad halted the Roadrunners with a 91-74 win over the Birds at O. Wayne Roberts Center in Williamsburg, Ky., on Tuesday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a close game early as Harrison Eghan and Ellis Lee hit buckets to keep the matchup tied at 7-7 just over three minutes in.
  • Anthony Johnson slammed one home for the Patriots as they extended the lead to 7 points (22-15) just shy of the 10-minute mark.
  • Qualen Pettus went on a 7-0 run of his own to close the deficit to two points (29-27) with 5:51 remaining in the half.
  • Donavan Miller hit a jumper with 49 ticks on the clock to make it a 4-point game (38-34), but J.J. Ramey answered for Cumberlands with a three-pointer to lead the Patriots to a 41-34 halftime lead.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Lee, Matt Compas, and Carterius Evans made field goals to keep the Birds in the game, but UC matched the Roadrunners and converted baskets off defensive stops to stretch their lead to 11 points (56-45) after another Ramey three.
  • DS battled back with Miller, Pettus, and Lee leading the way to cut it to 6 points (63-57) with just over 11 minutes left to play.
  • Cumberlands outscored Dalton State 12-7 over the next 6 minutes to get the lead back to double-digits (75-64).
  • Lee hit a three-ball with 4:08 to go to make it a 9-point game (78-69), but the Patriots hit another gear with a 13-5 run to close that put the game out of reach, 91-74.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (4-3 overall) with the loss, while (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) improves to (8-0 overall) with the win. Qualen Pettus came off the bench and led the Birds in scoring with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Ellis Lee had 15 points and 4 boards, with Donavan Miller adding 12 points and 4 assists. Franklin Almonte pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss.
 
Five Patriots hit double-figures, led by J.J. Ramey with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Jonathan Brown had 19 points and 6 assists, with D.J. Jones getting 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Anthony Johnson contributed 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Matthew Cormer was the last UC player in double-digits with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS out-rebounded UC 40-38, but the Patriots got 15 second-chance points compared to 10 for the Roadrunners. Points in the paint were relatively even, with Cumberlands holding a narrow 42-40 lead. Points off turnovers were the biggest statistical anomaly, with the Patriots dominating the stat 18-4.

The Roadrunners return home to take on Brewton-Parker (Ga.) on Saturday, November 25. Tip-Off from Bandy Gym is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
