Roadrunners Open Conference Play With Win Over Blue Mountain Christian


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State men's basketball opened the SSAC slate with a strong 73-59 win over Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Blue Mountain carried an early 6-point lead at 9-3 after back-to-back three-pointers from Jalen Boyd-Savage just over three minutes into the contest.
  • Dalton State battled back and evened the score at 14-14 after a Donavan Miller jumper in the lane at the 13:18 mark of the half.
  • The Birds soon took the lead and drew out a 10-point lead at 30-20 after a bucket from Antonio Lewis with 5:07 to go until halftime.
  • BMCC tried to cut into the lead, but Qualen Pettus hit a jumper with just over two minutes left for a 38-24 Roadrunner lead.
  • Allon Johnson capped the half with a bucket from long range to give the Birds a 41-29 lead at halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The first 5+ minutes of the second half belonged to Dalton State as they extended their lead to 18 points (51-33) after a basket from Carterius Evans.
  • A 7-0 run capped by a three-ball from Darien Newchruch for the Toppers followed as the advantage shrank to 11 points (51-40) with 10:42 on the clock.
  • Buckets from Ricks, Johnson, Evans, and Lewis helped Dalton State answer the Topper run and get the lead to 22 points at 70-48 with 5 minutes left in regulation.
  • DS maintained a steady double-digit advantage down the stretch to take a 73-59 conference opening win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (3-2 overall, 1-0 SSAC) with the win, while Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) falls to (4-3 overall, 0-1 SSAC) with the loss. Three Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Carterius Evans with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Qualen Pettus and Kawasiki Ricks had 10 points and 5 boards each, with Ricks adding 4 assists.
 
Manny Patrick had a 16-point, 13 rebound double-double to lead Blue Mountain Christian. Ty Pickron was the only other Topper in double-digits with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS held a 47-35 advantage on the glass and committed just 6 turnovers in the win. The Birds shot over 40% from the field in both halves and finished at 44.8% (30-for-67) overall. Defensively, Dalton State held Blue Mountain Christian to 27.27% (9-for-33) from the field in the first half and 33.3% (21-for-63) overall.
 
From the charity stripe, the Roadrunners could've extended their winning advantage if not for a 36.8% (7-for-19) clip. The Toppers were better but not by much as they went 8-for-16 (50%) from the free throw line. Points in the paint was a clear advantage for the Birds at 46-22.
