Men's Basketball Bounces Back With Win Over Tennessee Wesleyan


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State bounced back from a season-opening loss to protect home court with a 65-57 win over Tennessee Wesleyan in non-conference basketball action at Bandy Gymnasium in Dalton on Monday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State got on the board first and held the lead until the Bulldogs tied it at 7-7 early in the first half.
  • The game remained close until a short spurt from the Birds capped by two Donavan Miller free throws gave Dalton State a 5-point lead at 16-11 with 9:37 left in the half.
  • TWC kept the Roadrunners within reach and tied the game at 21-21 at the 5:10 mark.
  • With the game tied at 24-24, DS went on a 7-0 run to gain a 31-24 lead with 1:32 before halftime.
  • DS held the advantage and took a 33-26 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The second half opened with a 7-1 Roadrunner run to draw the lead out to 13 points at 40-27 with 16:55 on the clock.
  • Qualen Pettus and Carterius Evans got in on the act to help get the lead to 17 points (51-34) with 10:06 left in regulation.
  • The lead stayed near 20 points as Coach Ireland emptied the bench getting up to 19 points before the Bulldogs made a few late baskets.
  • When the clock struck zero, Dalton State walked off the court with their first win of the season, 65-57.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (1-1 overall) with the win, while Tennessee Wesleyan falls to (0-1 overall) with the loss. Donavan Miller led the Roadrunners with 14 points and 2 assists. Harrison Eghan had a huge game with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Matt Compas scored in double-figures with 12 points.
 
Ty Hurst hit some late baskets to add to his tally of 17 points to lead all scorers and the only Bulldogs in double-digits. Hurst added 5 rebounds as well.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS narrowly won the rebounding battle 45-43. The margin was closer in large part due to many second and third-chance opportunities by the Bulldogs in the final 3 minutes. Neither team was particularly lethal from long distance as the teams combined to go 5-for-43 from three-point range.
 
The Roadrunners forced 17 Bulldog turnovers and scored 14 points in the process compared to 7 for Tennessee Wesleyan. TWC held a 30-26 advantage in the paint, but DS scored more from the bench at 38-15.

UP NEXT
The Birds travel to Montgomery, Ala. for the SSAC/SUN Challenge on November 2 & 3. Their first opponent will be a familiar one in Coastal Georgia. Tip-Off from the Cramton Bowl Multiplex is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (CT).
