Roadrunners Fall In Season Opener To Bryan


DALTON, Ga. – Both teams got off to a slow start, but Bryan (Tenn.) was better in the final minutes as they assumed the lead in the final minute and a half of play and held on for a 75-71 win over Dalton State in the Roadrunners season opener at newly renovated Bandy Gymnasium in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Except two ties in the first 4 minutes, Bryan held the lead as they grabbed a 6-point advantage (18-12) at the 12:18 mark after a Jamari Bostic three-pointer.
  • Dalton State gradually whittled away and finally captured a lead at 22-21 after a Donavan Miller three-ball with 7:08 left in the half.
  • BC tied the game twice more, once with 3:05 on the clock (28-28) and another with 2:01 left in the half (30-30).
  • Matt Compas scored back-to-back buckets in the final 1:30 to send DS into halftime with a 34-30 lead.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Harrison Eghan got in foul trouble early but announced his presence at the start of the second half with a trey to extend the lead to 7 points at 37-30.
  • Ian Johnson then went on a tear for Bryan with four-straight buckets, three of which were three-pointers to put the Lions ahead 43-40 with 16:37 left.
  • Carterius Evans answered back with a three-point shot to tie it up, but the game moved into a stretch of ties and lead changes over the next 16 minutes of play.
  • Down three, Eghan hit a big three-pointer with 1:59 remaining to tie the game at 68-68.
  • Caleb Grimes retaliated with a bucket and a foul, hitting the and-1 to put Bryan up by 3 points again.
  • Donavan Miller called bank on the Roadrunners' next trip down court with a trey to tie it at 71-71 with 37 ticks on the clock.
  • Evans came up with a big block on Josh Baugher, leading to an inbound pass that was well drawn up from the Lions with Dalen Gales getting an open lay-in to put the Lions up 73-71.
  • Miller drove directly to the basket on the subsequent possession getting a shot up that Eghan rebounded and put back up but rolled off the front of the iron and into the hand of Jamari Bostic.
  • Bostic hit both foul shots to close out the game in favor of Bryan, 75-71.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (0-1 overall) with the loss, while Bryan (Tenn.) improves to (2-0 overall) with the win on the young season. Carterius Evans led the Birds with a 16 point, 11 rebound double-double in the loss, while blocking 4 shots. Harrison Eghan had 13 points, with Matt Compas and Donavan Miller adding 12 points each. Miller also dished out 8 assists. Ellis Lee showed his court vision contributing 5 dimes.
 
Josh Baugher led Bryan and all scorers with 25 points and collected 10 rebounds. Ian Johnson got hot in the second half, scoring 20 points with 5 three-pointers. Jamari Bostic had 18 points and 9 rebounds, with Caleb Grimes adding 10 points and 6 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds held the advantage on the boards (34-32), points in the paint (32-30) and bench points (20-0). Bryan went 11-32 (34.4%) from distance, with Dalton State going 10-29 (34.5%). Each team had 10 turnovers, leading to 15 points for the Lions and 13 for the Roadrunners.

Dalton State continues their two-game season-opening home stand with a bout against Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday, October 30. Tip-Off between the Bulldogs and Roadrunners is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
