Roadrunners Erase Halftime Deficit, Win Key SSAC Matchup With Blue Mountain


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State erased a six-point halftime deficit as five Roadrunners scored in double-figures in a 68-61 win over Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) in Southern States Athletic Conference basketball action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Jaelin Ferrell started the game off with a three-pointer as the Roadrunners scored the first five points of the game.
  • Blue Mountain answered back with 7-straight to take a 7-5 lead just under 4 minutes into the contest.
  • The Roadrunners started to gain an advantage and pulled out a 4-point lead (17-13) with 7:42 remaining.
  • Out of the media timeout, Blue Mountain reeled off an 8-0 run over the next 5 minutes to take a 22-17 lead.
  • Boubacar Kamissoko hit a jumper in the lane with just seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 3 points, but a solid in-bound play from the Toppers led to a three-pointer from Ryan Sanders as Blue Mountain carried a 6-point lead (30-24) into the half.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Ferrell once again started the half off with a three-pointer but they couldn't take advantage of opportunities as Blue Mountain kept the lead at 6 at the 17:36 mark.
  • Great play over the next two minutes saw the Birds tie the game at 35-35 after a Sean Cobb and 1 play.
  • DS slowly began to gain the momentum and busted off a 14-3 run with the score tied at 39-39 to take an 11-point lead (53-42) with 7:41 remaining in regulation.
  • With 3:14 on the clock, the DS advantage grew to 15 points (63-48) after a Jacquez Fountain trey.
  • Blue Mountain battled hard down the stretch cutting the lead to 6 at one point but Dalton State proved too much winning 68-61
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (10-6 overall, 5-3 SSAC) with the win, while Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) falls to (8-6 overall, 3-5 SSAC) with the loss. Sean Cobb and Carterius Evans led the way in the paint combining for 24 points and 10 boards. Cobb went for 12 and 4, with Evans had 12 and 6.
 
Jaelin Ferrell and Jacquez Fountain each had 11 points with Ferrell adding 7 rebounds. Both Ferrell and Fountain hit 3 three-pointers to account for 6 of the Roadrunners 8 treys on the night.
 
Donavan Miller was the last Roadrunner in double-digits with 10 points and 3 assists. Boubacar Kamissoko added a little bit of everything for the Birds with 9 points, 4 boards, and 5 dimes.
 
Jakobey Hitchens led Blue Mountain Christian and all scorers with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Ryan Sanders had 15 points with JonDarius Warren adding 13 points. Vatangoe Donzo had a quiet night scoring but pulled down 11 rebounds for the Toppers.

BY THE NUMBERS
It was 'even stevens' on the glass with a 32-32 tie between the teams. Neither team took much advantage on turnovers with BMCC holding a narrow lead at 14-11 as Dalton State gave Blue Mountain the ball back 14 times with BMCC turning it over 12 times.
 
DS 8-for-20 (40%) from behind the arc while BMCC went 5-for-13 (38.5%). The biggest difference in the game was from the free throw line where Dalton State hit 18-of-27 shots while Blue Mountain only hit 10-of-22.

UP NEXT
The Birds will stay at home as they host William Carey (Miss.) tomorrow, January 7 at Mashburn Arena. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. It is the second of two games to help fill the Birdfeeder on the Dalton State campus for students for the upcoming Spring semester.
