Buzzer Beater Downs Roadrunners


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State looked to be in control early, but a rally from William Carey ended in a buzzer beater from the Crusaders as they defeated the Roadrunners 74-72 in SSAC basketball action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Jaelin Ferrell once again hit a three-pointer to kick scoring off for a 3-0 Roadrunner lead.
  • The Birds played solid early and got out to a 17-8 lead after another Ferrell trey with 12:50 left in the first half.
  • A Boubacar Kamissoko rebound and put back extended the lead to 10 points (23-13) with 8:27 to play.
  • William Carey counted with some strategic timeouts and a 16-3 run to take a 29-26 lead just under 5 minutes later.
  • DS came back with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 33-29.
  • Carey battled to tie the game at 36-36 before Donavan Miller hit a jumper with 6 second left to give the Birds a 38-36 lead at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • After exchanging the lead several times, Dalton State gained the momentum and pulled the lead back out to 6 points (50-44) with 12:02 on the clock.
  • WC worked to get the lead back and did so at the 8:30 mark (55-53) after a three from Willie Moody.
  • Dalton State tied the game on three occasions before taking a 2-point lead (66-64) off a Sean Cobb dunk with 2:12 remaining in regulation.
  • After a failed possession from each team, Moody hit another three to give the Crusaders a short-lived lead (67-66) before the Birds tied it up with a free throw from Jacquez Fountain on the next possession with 59 seconds to go.
  • Moody hit a big shot for the Crusaders next trip down court as his three-pointer gave Carey a 70-67 lead with 42 seconds left.
  • WC went 2-for-1 versus the Roadrunners at the free throw line to maintain the 3-point lead until Jacquez Fountain hit a three off a broken play to tie it up at 72-72 with 6 seconds remaining.
  • William Carey took timeout and drew up a play that saw Casey Smith drive down court and hard to the hole before dishing off to a wide open Emile Kazeneza on the wing for the game-winner as WC left Dalton with a 74-72 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (9-7 overall, 4-4 SSAC) with the loss, while William Carey (Miss.) improves to (6-10 overall, 2-6 SSAC) with the win. Sean Cobb paced the Roadrunners with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
 
Jaelin Ferrell and Donavan Miller each had 12 points with Ferrell connecting on 4 threes and Miller getting to the hoop for the majority of his points. Jacquez Fountain added 11 points including the game tying three with 6 seconds on the clock.
 
Casey Smith and Willie Moody tied as the games leading scorers with 17 points-a-piece for the Crusaders. Arturro Bingham had 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Emile Kazeneza had 11 points, all in the second half, including the game winner at the buzzer.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State owned the glass 32-22 including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive end. William Carey hit 28 field goals compared to 25 for Dalton State with both squads hitting 9 three-pointers.
 
DS turned the 14 offensive rebounds into just 16 second chance points while WC had 12 second chance points on 8 offensive boards. The Crusaders were 9-for-10 from the charity stripe while the Roadrunners only managed to go 13-for-25 including 3-for-9 in the second half which proved to be a difference in the ball game.

UP NEXT
The Birds will have two games on the road before they return to Mashburn Arena. That road swing begins on Saturday, January 14 when Dalton State travels to Talladega, Ala. for a matchup with the Talladega Tornadoes. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
