Birds Get Solid Road Win Against Bryan


DAYTON, Tenn. – Dalton State responded well after their first loss of the season bouncing back with a 65-51 road win over Bryan (Tenn.) at Summers Gymnasium in Dayton, Tenn. on Tuesday night. The win for the Birds avenges a home loss to the Lions last year.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Bryan missed some early threes which allowed Dalton State to jump out to a 9-2 lead five minutes into the game.
  • Back-to-back treys from Jaelin Ferrell made it an 11-point lead (18-7) with 11:11 left in the half.
  • A Trey Twa dunk followed by a 3-pointer from Franklin Almonte extended the lead to 15 points (27-12) with just under 6 minutes remaining in the first period.
  • Another three, this time from Brad Milliorn got the lead to 17 points (32-15) with 3:39 on the clock.
  • Good play from the Lions over the final 3 minutes cut the Roadrunner lead to 11 points (34-23) at the half.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Dalton State opened the second half with a 14-4 run capped by a three from Ferrell put the lead at 23 points (48-25) at the 14:01 mark.
  • The Birds achieved their largest lead of the night at 24 points when Almonte hit another shot from distance to make the score 55-31 with 10:07 remaining in regulation.
  • Bryan trimmed the advantage under 20 points with 3:52 left after a lay in from Dalen Gales.
  • The Gales layup started a 9-3 run from Bryan but it was too late as time ran out with Dalton State getting a 65-51 dub.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (2-1 overall) with the win, while Bryan (Tenn.) falls to (0-2 overall) with the loss. Jaelin Ferrell led the Roadrunners in scoring for the second time this season with 16 points on 50% (5-for-10) shooting from distance. Donavan Miller added 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Carterius Evans had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
 
Noah Mulaski paced Bryan in scoring with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. Dalen Gales contributed 10 points off the bench for the Lions.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners were more efficient from beyond the arc at 39.1% (9-for-23) while holding the Lions to 23.1% (6-for-26) for the game and 1-for-8 in the second half. DS also got back on the glass hard pulling down 43 rebounds with 17 of those coming on the offensive side which turned into 15 second chance points. Dalton State also had single-digit turnovers and only gave up 7 points off turnovers to Bryan.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will be back at Mashburn Arena for their next game as they open the home season on Thursday, November 3 against Fisk (Tenn.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
