Roadrunners Charge Past Southeastern Baptist In Season Opener


MARIETTA, Ga. – Dalton State opened the 2022-23 basketball season in convincing fashion pulling out a huge second half lead in route to a 98-52 win over Southeastern Baptist (Miss.) in the opening game of the Life University Classic at the Eagles Nest in Marietta on Friday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • DS played a solid first 3 minutes jumping out to an early 9-3 lead after a Brad Milliorn rebound and put back.
  • A Baylor Wells trey got Southeastern Baptist back to within 2 points at 18-16 just past the mid-way point of the first half.
  • With the score 19-18 with 8:52 left in the half in Dalton State's favor, the Roadrunners turned up the heat on defense forcing 7 turnovers and going on a 17-0 run over a 5+ minute stretch to take an 18-point lead.
  • The Roadrunners held the Chargers to just 4 points the rest of the way and scored 11 more of their own to carry a 47-22 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Carterius Evans set the tone for the second half getting a dunk to begin the period followed by a Sean Cobb free throw to extend the lead to 28 points.
  • An 8-2 spurt from SBC cut the lead to 22 points at 52-30 but it was the closest the Chargers would get the rest of the evening.
  • A layup and one play from Jacquez Fountain drew the lead out to 34 points (69-35) with 11:11 left to play.
  • Three-pointers from Jaelin Ferrell and Trey Twa backed with a layup from Jake Martinson put the advantage at 45 points (86-41) with 4:01 remaining.
  • Dalton State hit their biggest lead of 47 points after a Jalen Barker trey with 24 ticks on the clock.
  • As the buzzer sounded, it was a resounding 98-52 win for the Birds to open the 22-23 season.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (1-0 overall) with the win, while Southeastern Baptist (Miss.) falls to (0-1 overall) with the loss. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Jaelin Ferrell Jacquez Fountain with 15 points each. Ferrell did his damage on 5-of-10 shooting from behind the arc, while Fountain hit 2 three's and went 6-of-11 from the field.
 
Sean Cobb had 13 points and 6 rebounds with Carterius Evans adding 10 points and 4 boards. Jalen Barker provided a spark off the bench with 10 points in five minutes of play.
 
Jacobi York and Brannon Singletary each had 10 points to lead Southeastern Baptist is scoring. Reginald Jones had 9 points with Baylor Wells adding 7 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
The battle on the glass went the way of Dalton State 39-22. Eighteen of the Roadrunners boards were on the offensive end which translated into 26 second chance points. The Birds also had 29 points off 18 Southeastern Baptist turnovers and scored 50 points off the bench as DS showed their depth with 11 players getting significant playing time.

UP NEXT
It's a fast turnaround for the Birds as they hit the hardwood again on tomorrow, October 29 for their second matchup in the Life University Classic against Thomas (Ga.). Dalton State will be looking to avenge a loss to the NightHawks last season in the same tournament. Tip-Off from the Eagles Nest in Marietta is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
