Roadrunners Fall To Thomas At Life University Classic


MARIETTA, Ga. – A day can make a difference and it did for the Dalton State men's basketball team as they went cold from the field in the second half of a 90-71 loss to Thomas (Ga.) in the Life University Classic at the Eagles Nest in Marietta on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • The first bucket of the game for the Birds was a trey from Brad Milliorn to take an early 3-2 lead, the only lead of the game for Dalton State.
  • DS stayed close but the TU steadily drew the lead out to 11 points (21-10) at the 12:27 mark thanks in part to an 11-2 run.
  • A Donavan Miller bucket and 1 cut the deficit to 7 points at 28-21 with 7:30 left in the half.
  • Timely 3-point shooting from the Night Hawks stretched the lead out to 16 points (44-28) with 3:30 to go until halftime.
  • Strong will from the Roadrunners saw them close the half outscoring the Night Hawks 10-4 to go into halftime down 10 (48-38).
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Roadrunners quickly got the TU advantage back to single digits but a 14-4 run from Thomas put the lead at 18 points (65-47) with 14:00 minutes left to play.
  • The deficit grew larger, up to 22 points (70-48) with 11:59 on the clock and stabilized around that mark for the better part of the half.
  • Thomas grew their lead to as much as 24 points (88-64) with 2:31 to go and held on for a 90-71 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (1-1 overall) with the loss, while Thomas (Ga.) improves to (1-1 overall) with the win. Three Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Donavan Miller, who led all players with 22 points. Sean Cobb scored 16 points and added 8 rebounds, while Jacquez Fountain added 11 points.
 
Thomas also had three players in double-digits led by Jarvis Brown with 20 points. Toriano Lewis had 17 and 4 rebounds with Mohammed Abubakar chipping in 13 points and 7 boards.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State had a solid first half shooting 63.6% (14-for-22) from the field to stay within striking distance at the break but took 12 less shots that Thomas in the half who shot 52.9% (18-for-34). The Night Hawks kept up the pace in the second period with a 55.5% clip at 15-for-27 shooting compared to 35.5% (11-for-31) for the Roadrunners.
 
What won the game for Thomas was rebounding and 3-point shooting. Thomas held a 38-23 advantage on the glass and hit 12-of-25 shots from distance. The Birds only managed to hit 2-of-12 shots from behind the arc both of which came in the first half.

UP NEXT
The Birds will stay on the road as they travel to Dayton, Tenn. to take on Bryan (Tenn.) on Tuesday, November 1. Tip Off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
