Lady Roadrunners Suffer First Home Loss Of Season


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State fell back to .500 on the year and suffered their first home loss of the season with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Georgia Gwinnett at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
  • (1-0 GGC) GGC: Joy Mertzig connected on a cross from Mya Alibudbud for the first goal of the match in the 7'.
  • (1-1 T) DS: Molly Duncan tied the match in the 14' on a beautiful 20-yard free kick past a diving Matilda Waldt
  • (2-1 GGC) GGC: The Grizzlies struck again in the 29' when Mertzig and Bre Harvey hooked up for a goal scoring set.
SECOND HALF
  • (3-1 GGC) GGC: Mertzig snagged the hat trick in the 71' when Brooke Alvarez came out of net to kick a ball out of the DS zone and Mertzig got the deflection and went to goal uncontested.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to 4-4 overall with the loss, while Georgia Gwinnett improves to 4-2 overall with the win. Molly Duncan collected her team leading 4th goal of the season, while Brooke Alvarez had six saves in net.
 
GGC pressed from the onset trying to get under the Lady Roadrunners skin. They only allowed 5 shots all afternoon to hold the advantage by 5 and held DS to just 3 on goal. The Grizz also outshot the Lady Birds from the corner, 5-1.

Dalton State will travel to face #6 Cumberlands (Ky.) as part of a doubleheader with the men's squad on Saturday, September 18 in Williamsburg, Ky. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CT)
