Hot Shooting Faulkner Takes Down Dalton State


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Roadrunners stormed back from a 21-point halftime deficit but a hot shooting Faulkner squad held on late for a 90-82 win over Dalton State in SSAC action at Tine Davis Gymnasium in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • C.J. Perry hit a three-ball for a 3-2 lead at the 19:11 left in the half, but did not score again until 12:46 remaining, ironically on another Perry three. Faulkner led by 15 points after the score.
  • The Birds began to put points up but Faulkner stretched out the lead to 19 points (36-17) after a Jalon Perry score with 5:44 on the clock.
  • A Jamel Cleveland bucket with 2:06 left in the half got the Eagle lead to their biggest of the half, 24 points at 48-24.
  • DS scored 4 of the final 6 points in the half but trailed 50-28 at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Dalton State hit their first four shots of the second half to cut the lead to 17 points (55-38).
  • DS continued to be efficient from the field but so were the Eagles as the Roadrunners got the lead to 12 points (66-54) with 8:53 to play in the game.
  • Faulkner would stretch the lead back out to 20 points after a J.C. Norris three with 3:13 on the clock.
  • A furious stretch of play from DS saw them outscore the Eagles 15-4 down the stretch but they would run out of time as Faulkner came away with a 90-82 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (7-6 overall, 2-2 SSAC) with the loss, while Faulkner (Ala.) improves to (10-3 overall, 2-1 SSAC) with the win. Four Birds scored in double-figures led by Donovan Miller with 19 points.
 
C.J. Perry added 14 points and 7 rebounds while going 4-for-5 from distance. Rodley Adjei and Marquel Wiggins each scored 12 points. Antares Gwyn didn't score in double-digits but was steady with 8 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists.
 
C.J. Hines hit 5 treys and led the Eagles with 26 points. He added 6 rebounds and 5 assists to his stat line as well. Jalon Perry followed suit with 16 points. Trace Hill and Daniel Garmendia each had 11 points with Isaiah Brooks contributing 10 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners only managed to go 9-for-24 (37.5%) from the field in the first half, but stormed back into the game by shooting at a 66.67% (22-for-33) clip in the second period. It wasn't enough though as Faulkner shot a consistent 55.6% for the game overall. 58.62% in the first half and 52% in the second half.
 
Overall, DS scored more field goals (31) than Faulkner (30), but Faulkner hit more from behind the 3-PT line, 11-8. The battle on the glass went to the Roadrunners 29-21 as did points in the paint, 36-34. The glaring difference in the contest was points off turnover where the Eagles scored 26 points off 17 DS turnovers. In contrast, the Roadrunners only scored 8 off 14 Eagle give-a-ways.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will have an extended Christmas break and not be on the hardwood again until Monday, January 3 when they travel to Mount Vernon to take on Brewton-Parker (Ga.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
