Birds Pick Up Conference Road Win At Brewton-Parker (Ga.)


MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Dalton State started the 2022 off on the right track with a 67-52 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Gillis Gymnasium in Mount Vernon on Monday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Brewton-Parker got out front early but the Roadrunners tied it up with 12:24 on the clock with a Jalen Barker basket.
  • After an exchange of buckets, the Barons hit a spurt to go up by 6 points at 23-17 with 6:26 remaining in the half.
  • BP kept the lead until the final minutes of the half when DS closed the half with an 11-2 run that Nasir Cassel capped with a trey to put the Birds up by 4 points (32-28) at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Barons started with 6 quick points to tie the game at 34-34 a little under 3 minutes into the half.
  • DS answered with 6-striaght of their own to reclaim the lead at 40-34.
  • Chance Hatcher hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead down to 3 points at 42-39 but the Roadrunners began to pull away from there.
  • C.J. Perry went for 5 points-in-a-row and Igor Stokic hit a free throw to put DS up by 9 points (48-39) with 8:31 left to play.
  • A Barker jumper at the 5:19 mark extended the lead to 12 points (57-45).
  • A trey from Donavan Miller got the lead to its largest of the game, 16 points with 2:11 to play.
  • Down the stretch the Birds iced the game to come away with a 67-52 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (8-6 overall, 3-2 SSAC) with the win, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) falls to (1-15 overall, 0-5 SSAC) with the loss. Rodley Adjei led the Roadrunners in scoring with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
 
Backcourt mate Donavan Miller added 12 points with C.J. Perry also scoring in double-figures with 11 points. Igor Stokic was bully on the boards with 11 while also scoring 5 points.
 
Floyd Davis and Bryce Wilson both scored in double-digits for the Barons with Davis leading all scorers with 16 points and Wilson contributing 11. Wilson (7) and Davis (6) also combined for 13 of the team's rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds held a slim 4-point advantage at the half due in part to going just 11-for-31 (35.48%) from the field in the first half. They would pull away in the second half by shooting 55.56% (10-for-18) in the second half.
 
The defense was a big part of the Roadrunners extending the lead in the second period as they held the Barons to 10-of-29 (34.48%) shooting overall and 0-for-7 from distance. DS also shot a cool 80% from the charity stripe and won the rebounding battle 37-31.

UP NEXT
The Roadrunners will have a stiff test on deck with the #1 team in the land, Loyola (La.) comes to Mashburn Arena on Thursday, January 6. Tip-Off between the Birds and the Pack is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
