Dalton State Gets Rebound Win Over Oakwood


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State recovered from loss to Bryan (Tenn.) on Tuesday to defeat Oakwood (Ala.) 88-72 in non-conference action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a close game early with Oakwood holding a 1-point lead at 9-8 five minutes in.
  • The score remained tight with the lead switching back-and-forth several times until the Roadrunners took advantage with a Mohammed Abubakar basket at the 5:11 mark for a 24-22 lead.
  • Abubakar's and-one kickstarted a 14-0 capped by a Darien Cone trey to give the Birds a 36-22 lead three minutes later.
  • DS kept their foot on the gas pedal and took a 41-28 lead into the break
THE SECOND HALF
  • Gradually, the lead grew with it getting to 21 points (56-35) after a C.J. Perry three-pointer with 15:36 on the clock.
  • The lead remained in the twenties and got to its largest with 5:07 to go after a Jaelin Ferrell three.
  • Oakwood turned up the intensity of the final few minutes to cut the lead to 14 points with 45 ticks remaining, but Dalton State finished out the game with a lay-in from Rodley Adjei and an 88-72 victory.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (3-2 overall) with the win, while Oakwood (Ala.) falls to (2-2 overall) with the loss. Three Roadrunners scored in double-figures with C.J. Perry leading the way with 22 points on 4-of-5 shooting from distance. Rodley Adjei had 10 points and 4 assists, while Mohammed Abubakar chipped in 13 points and 5 rebounds.
 
Christopher Dorsey paced Oakwood with 14 points. Jaquavious Horton added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Edmen Stewart and Victor Fuller also had 9 points each for the Ambassadors.

BY THE NUMBERS
Oakwood outrebounded Dalton State 34-27 with a lot of those giving the Ambassadors second chances. The Roadrunners squashed most of the second chance opportunities only allowing 11 points after the first attempt and getting 14 points of their own.
 
The most glaring stat was points off turnovers where DS scored 29 points off 14 Oakwood giveaways. From the floor, Dalton State shot 50.9% (29-for-57) with Oakwood shooting 43.8% (28-for-64). The Roadrunners hit 9 three's while Oakwood hit 7.

The Roadrunners hit the hardwood again on Friday, November 12 in Talladega, Ala. when they take on William Woods (Mo.) in the Talladega College Classic. Tip-Off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT).
