Birds Score Last Five To Beat William Woods


TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Roadrunners were down by three points late in the game but scored the last five to snag a 52-50 win against William Woods (Mo.) in the first matchup ever between the two teams in the Talladega Classic in Talladega, Ala. on Friday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • The game was tight early with five ties in the first 10 minutes of play, but the Roadrunners took the advantage with a 7-0 run to take a 17-12 lead at the 6:28 mark.
  • The Owls fought back and re-took the lead at 22-21 after a Darius Yohe jumper with 2:56 remaining in the half.
  • Dalton State ended the half with another 7-0 run to take a 28-22 lead into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Mohammed Abubakar threw down a rim rattling dunk with 16:10 left to play to get the lead to 8 points at 34-26.
  • Shortly after, William Woods hit another gear with a 15-2 run to take a 5-point lead (41-36) at the 9:11 mark.
  • The Birds battled back and tied the game at 42-42 after a Franklin Almonte jumper with 5:01 left to play.
  • Darius Yohe hit a bucket on the next possession and converted the and-1 from the free throw line, but Nasir Cassel rose up and hit a clutch three next time down court to tie it at 45-45.
  • The Owls hit one more bucket but Antares Gwyn will the Roadrunners down the stretch with some tough play as Dalton State scored the final 5 points to get the 52-50 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (4-2 overall) with the win, while William Woods (Mo.) falls to (2-3 overall) with the loss. Only two Roadrunners scored in double-figures with Mohammed Abubakar leading the way with 14 points and Franklin Almonte adding 11 points. The two also combined for 9 rebounds. Antares Gwyn had 8 key points and pulled down 13 boards on the evening.
 
Makenzie Fessler and Jared Crutcher led the Owls with 18 and 15 points respectively. Darius Yohe added 7 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

BY THE NUMBERS
The rebounding battle went to the Birds, 45-33, as did points in the paint, 24-20. DS had 16 second chance points and 15 points off turnovers, while WW had 5 second chance points and 9 off turnovers.
 
Dalton State shot 41.38% (12-for-29) in the first half but only 27.59% (8-for-29) in the second half. In contrast, William Woods shot 38.1% (8-for-21) in the first half and 35.71% (10-for-28) in the second half. The teams combined to go 8-of-36 from distance with the Owls hitting 5 and the Roadrunners 3.

Dalton State will stay in Alabama and face Lyon (Ark.) in their second game of the Talladega College Classic on Saturday, November 13. Tip-Off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CT).
