Roadrunners Strong Down The Stretch In Win Over Lyon


TALLADEGA, Ala. – Dalton State locked down late and held on for an 81-77 win against Lyon (Ark,) in the first matchup ever between the two teams in the Talladega Classic in Talladega, Ala. on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Lyon got off to a hot start and held an early 10-point lead at 14-4 just shy of 5 minutes into the game which forced a 30-second DS timeout.
  • The next 3 minutes belonged to the Birds as they posted a 9-0 run to close the gap to 1-point at 14-13.
  • The Scots built the lead back up to 6 points and continued to hold it steady for the next 4 ½ minutes until a Nasir Cassel trey sparked another 9-0 run from the Roadrunners that saw them take the lead, 30-27, with 3:57 in the half.
  • The lead was briefly snatched back by Lyon, but two threes from C.J. Perry gave Dalton State a 36-34 lead at the half.
THE SECOND HALF
  • It was a slow start to the second half but DS managed to build up a 6-point lead at 46-40 after a Franklin Almonte three pointer at the 14:06 mark.
  • Another big three from Nasir Cassel increased the lead to 10 points at 58-48 with 8:23 on the clock.
  • Lyon responded with a 12-0 run over the next 4 minutes to take a 61-58 lead.
  • Cassel was clutch again with another trey to tie it at 61-61 on the next possession.
  • DS held the lead until Lyon again tied it at 75-75 with 1:27 to play.
  • The Birds answered the call by scoring 6 of the final 8 points to get the hard-fought win, 81-77.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (5-2 overall) with the win, while Lyon (Ark.) falls to (2-5 overall) with the loss. Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Rodley Adjei with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Franklin Almonte had 15 points and 3 rebounds, while C.J. Perry and Nasir Cassell added 11 and 10 points respectively hitting 5 of Dalton State's three pointers.
 
Ben Keton led all scorers on the day with 30 points for Lyon. Grant Patterson added 19 points with John Paul Morgan pulling down 12 rebounds for the Scots.

BY THE NUMBERS
It was a good day from the field overall for Dalton State as they shot 44.6% (29-for-65) from the field. Lyon was slightly better going 29-for-61 (47.5%) for the game. The Roadrunners hit 10 triples in the game at a 38.5% clip. The Scots were one less with 9 threes.
 
Lyon was tough on the glass pulling down 39 rebounds compared to 30 for Dalton State. Each team's largest lead was 10 points. For Lyon, that came early in the first half at 14-4. For Dalton State it came at the 8:23 mark of the second half.

The Roadrunners will be on the road for their next matchup as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to open SSAC play against Stillman (Ala.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT).
