#10 Eagles Take Second Of Four Matchups With Roadrunners


DALTON, Ga. - Dalton State had the early momentum, but #10 Faulkner (Ala.) shot an astounding 64% from the field in the second half to get the 85-73 win over the Roadrunners at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Tuesday night.

THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a great start for the Roadrunners as they jumped out to a 13-5 lead just over 4 minutes in.
  • Faulkner battled back and took the lead for the first time at 21-19 at the 9:41 mark on a trey from Jordan Hamlette.
  • The Eagles extended the lead to 7 points (30-23) with 5:09 left in the half after a bucket from C.J. Williamson.
  • DS responded as Antares Gwyn started an 8-0 run that Marquel Wiggins finished off to give the Birds a 31-30 lead with 2:31 on the clock.
  • Faulkner came back with a 9-2 run of their own to finish the half and carry a 39-33 lead into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Aaron Burress made the first basket of the half, but Falkner score 13 of the next 15 points to draw the lead out to 13 points at 52-39 with 16:42 left to play.
  • Hamlette hit a shot in the lane that was followed by two Garrett Sanderson free throws to increase the Roadrunner deficit to 18 points at 61-43 with 13:31 remaining in regulation.
  • The Eagle lead held at around 12-15 points until a 7-0 run from the Birds cut the lead to 8 points (71-63) with 5:45 on the clock.
  • Faulkner answered with an 11-5 run to get the lead back to 16 points and hold on for an 85-73 win.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (5-8 overall, 4-4 SSAC) with the loss, while #10 Faulkner (Ala.) improves to (16-1 overall, 7-0 SSAC) with the win. Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures with Marquel Wiggins leading with 18 points.
 
Antares Gwyn had 15 points, while Paul Eromosele and Aaron Burress each had 12 points. Gwyn pulled 9 balls off the glass with Burress adding 8 boards of his own.
 
Three Eagles scored in double-figures with Jordan Hamlette leading with 25 points and 6 assists. C.J. Williamson had 17 points with Garrett Sanderson adding 11 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
Both squads were decent from the field in the first half with the Roadrunners shooting 16-for-40 (40%) and the Eagles going 12-for-34 (35.29%). The second half saw an offensive clinic as the Birds shot at a 50% (16-for-32) clip, but Faulkner was better at 64% (16-for-25).
 
Officiating played a role as Faulkner got to the free throw line 25 times hitting 21. DS could only manage 10 attempts with 8 of those coming in the second half. Efficiency from three-point range was crucial as Faulkner went 8-of-25 (32%) compared to 4-of-16 (25%) for Dalton State.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will get a week off before they hit the road to face #10 Faulkner (Ala.). Tipoff at Tine Davis Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (CT).
