Dalton State Gets Big Win Over Middle Georgia


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State hit 10 3's and shot 49.1% from the field in avenging a Thursday loss to Middle Georgia State with a 74-53 win over the Knights at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
  • Antares Gwyn and C.J. Perry got the Birds on the scoreboard first with back-to-back buckets and a 4-0 lead.
  • Jordan Willis hit two free throws to get MGA on the board, but DS hit an 11-3 spurt to take a 15-5 lead and force a Knight timeout at the 14:50 mark.
  • Middle Georgia got the lead down to 4 points (20-16) at the 11:53 after Willis had a 5-0 run of his own.
  • The Birds drew it out to double-digits again at 29-19 with 6:59 remaining in the half after a Marquel Wiggins bucket.
  • Dalton State kept the lead above 5 points the rest of the half and took a 36-31 lead into the break.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Paul Eromosele hit the opening bucket of the half that keyed a 9-0 run that Aaron Burress capped off at the free throw line with 14:52 left in regulation to give the Roadrunners a 45-31 lead.
  • Igor Stokic hit a shot in the lane to extend the lead to 17 points (52-35) at the 11:19 mark.
  • The Roadrunners remained in control consistently drawing the lead out until they hit their biggest lead of the day at 25 points (74-49) with 1:05 to go.
  • As the buzzer sounded, the Roadrunners avenged their loss from 2 days ago with a 74-53 win over the Knights.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (5-7 overall, 4-3 SSAC) with the win, while Middle Georgia State falls to (5-2 overall, 2-2 SSAC) with the loss. C.J. Perry was hot from the outside, hitting 7 3's and tallying 28 points. The 7 treys tie him for second most in a game in school-history. Perry also added 3 rebounds and 4 assists.
 
Antares Gywn (10) and Marquel Wiggins (11) also scored in double-figures for the Roadrunners. Gwyn finished off another double-double with 11 boards, while Wiggins narrowly missed a double-double pulling 9 off the glass.
 
Jordan Willis was the only Knight to score in double-figures with 17 points. Willis only scored 2 points in the second half after posting 15 in the first.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds controlled the glass, winning the rebounding margin 43-21. They also scored more in the paint, 26-22, while points off turnovers were a wash at 7-7. The Roadrunners were highly efficient on the offensive end scoring at a 49.1% (26-for-53) clip and tough on the defensive end holding the Knights to 35.8% (19-for-53) from the field.
 
Dalton State hit 10-of-24 (41.7%) from distance and held Middle Georgia to 4-of-20 (20%) from three-point land. DS was 12-of-13 (92.3%) from the charity stripe, while MGA was 11-of-17 (64.7%). The Roadrunners hit the first 2 shots in the game and never trailed in the contest.

UP NEXT
Dalton State finishes up a three-game homestand on Tuesday, January 26 when they host #16 Faulkner (Ala.). Tipoff at Bandy Gym is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
