Birds Come From Behind To Defeat Voorhees

DALTON, Ga. – On a night that many in attendance and on the sidelines had a heavy heart, the Roadrunners used a 7-0 run in the final 2 minutes to pull out a 77-75 win over Voorhees (S.C.) in non-conference action at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Tuesday.

THE FIRST HALF
  • The Roadrunners raced out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Statan Levine hit back-to-back 3's to give Voorhees a 6-5 lead at just under 3 minutes in.
  • DS turned it around and pulled out a 6-point lead at 17-11 at the 13:33 mark.
  • Two Ezekiel Williamsonbey free throws tied it up at 17-17, but the Roadrunners quickly regathered and opened the lead back up to 7 points at 28-21 with 6:39 remaining in the half.
  • Two more treys from Levine got the Tigers back into it as they tied it up once again at 28-28 with 4:12 on the clock.
  • Voorhees briefly grabbed a 2-point lead before the Birds closed the half outscoring the Tigers 7-3 to carry a 38-36 lead into the break.

THE SECOND HALF
  • C.J. Perry opened the half with a 3 to give the Roadrunners a 41-36 lead.
  • VC battled back but the Birds gradually extended the lead and posted the highest mark of the night at 12 points (58-46) after a Marquel Bucket in the paint capped a 7-0 run at the 10:15 mark of the half.
  • The game looked to be in control, but Terril Windom for Voorhees had other plans as he keyed a 14-0 run by hitting 4 treys-in-a-row to go along with a bucket from Zachary White to give the Tigers a 1-point lead.
  • The lead traded hands a few more times, but VC looked to have the game in hand with a 5-point lead (75-70) with 2:33 left in regulation.
  • Perry hit a bucket to go along with two Wiggins free throws to cut the deficit to 1-point with 1:10 left.
  • Voorhees held the ball till the shot clock almost expired then collected an offensive rebound off a missed shot to reset the shot clock.
  • They did it again a few seconds later, but instead of holding the ball they put it back up where Igor Stokic gathered the rebound then hit Marquel Wiggins with a nice outlet pass in stride.
  • Wiggins drove to the hole and hit the lay in, drawing a foul with 10 ticks on the clock.
  • He hit the free throw for the 77-75 lead.
