Willis Bucket With Two Seconds Left Downs Roadrunners

COCHRAN, Ga. – Dalton State tied it up with under 10 seconds on the clock but Jordan Willis answered back with a jumper from the wing with 2 ticks on the clock to give Middle Georgia State a 70-68 win over the Roadrunners at Morris Gym in Cochran on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State grabbed the early lead at 7-5 at the 18:18 mark and again at 10-7 with 16:21 on the clock, but Middle Georgia clawed back to gain an 11-10 lead with 13:57 until halftime.
  • It would remain the theme of the half as neither team could gain a lead of more than 3 points.
  • The Roadrunners would take the lead for the last time in the first half at the 8:36 when C.J. Perry got free in the lane for 2.
  • MGA tied the game on the next possession and held the advantage until Perry hit a bucket in the final second of the period to tie the contest (34-34) at the half.
  • The first half featured 9 lead changes and 8 ties.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Middle Georgia got the first bucket of the second half and drew out a 5-point lead with 15:42 left in regulation.
  • DS responded in a big way with a 9-0 run capped by an Antares Gwyn basket to take a 47-43 lead at the 12:02 mark.
  • They held the lead for the next 4 minutes before an 8-0 run from the Knights gave them a 57-53 lead with 7:50 remaining.
  • MGA kept the lead with the exception of three ties at 57-57, 60-60, and 66-66 when Marquel Wiggins tied the contest with free throws all 3 times.
  • Jordan Willis hit the go-ahead basket on a drive to the lane with 26 seconds to go that drew a foul.
  • Willis missed the and-1 that gave the Birds a chance to tie with just a 2 pointer.
  • After a timeout to setup the offense, Wiggins got the ball on the block and finished it off with 9 ticks on the clock to tie the game at 68-68.
  • The Knights flew down the court and found Willis who made a move and hit a fall away shot from the wing to take a 70-68 lead with 2 seconds left.
  • One last heave to the basket went to the side at Middle Georgia took the first game of the weekend series, 70-68.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (4-7 overall, 3-3 SSAC) with the loss, while Middle Georgia State improves to (5-1 overall, 2-1 SSAC) with the win. Marquel Wiggins led the Roadrunners with 25 points and 9 rebounds. C.J. Perry joined as the only other Bird in double-figures with 14 points. Antares Gwyn barely missed a double-double with 8 points and 10 boards.
 
Jordan Willis matched Wiggins with a game-high 25 points for the Knights. Willis added 5 rebounds and 4 assists, with Ijon Owens collecting 14 points for Middle Georgia as the only other Knight in double-figures.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State won the battle on the glass (38-29), points in the paint (32-26), points off turnovers (13-6) and bench points (29-28). Second chance points went to the Knights (12-11).
 
Both teams shot over 40% from the field with Middle Georgia at 43.3% (29-for-67) and Dalton State at 41.7% (25-for-60). The Knights hit 4 more shots from behind the arc than did the Roadrunners (9-5), but Dalton State went 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the charity stripe compared to 3-of-7 (42.9%) for Middle Georgia.

Dalton State will be on the hardwood at Bandy Gym again on Saturday, January 23 hosting Middle Georgia State. Tipoff at Bandy Gym is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
