#4 Roadrunners Withstand Late Run From William Carey (Miss.) To Advance In SSAC Basketball Championships

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – #4 Dalton State saw a 15-point lead dwindle in the final minutes thanks in part to an assault of three-pointers by William Carey, but held on for an 84-82 victory to advance to the semifinals of the SSAC Basketball Championships presented by Newk's Eatery at Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a slow start for both squads with the first points coming nearly three minutes into the game on a Jartavious Dobbs bucket.
  • William Carey opened up a 4-1 lead, but C.J. Perry nailed a deep trey to tie the game up just shy of the four-minute mark.
  • Dalton State opened up a small lead (19-12) that the Crusaders trimmed down to one-point with 8:52 remaining in the half.
  • From there, the Roadrunners steadily began to draw the lead out and with the help of missed free throws from Carey got the lead to 11 points (34-23) with 3:07 to go.
  • A solid breakaway jam from Dauson Womack stopped a small glimmer of momentum for the Crusaders and kept the lead in double-digits (36-26).
  • Another Womack bucket and a three-ball from Kevon Tucker added to the advantage as the Roadrunners carried a 15-point lead (43-28) into the half.

THE SECOND HALF
  • WCU came out of the break with renewed vigor, but were matched by the Roadrunners as the lead remained 15 points with 13 minutes to go.
  • Shortly after, Carey began to cut into the lead as Brandon Cranford got hot from the field and sparked a 16-5 run to cut the lead to three points (58-55) with 7:50 left in the game.
  • The Roadrunners built the lead back up and held a 15-point advantage (77-62) with 2:06 on the clock, but things got crazy in a hurry.
  • With 39 seconds, remaining the lead stood at 10 points (80-70) after a Javonte McDavid three.
  • Heath Phillips then hit 1-of-2 from the line, but Rodney Mallet came down and tossed up a three that went in to cut the margin to eight.
  • A turnover on the inbound pass gave the ball back to Carey and Cranford hit a double-pump lay in to get it to six points.
  • Rodley Adjei then hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to increase the lead to seven, but again, another crazy three, this time an off balance fade away from McDavid trimmed the lead to four.
  • Randy Bell went to the line next and hit 1-of-2 and Cranford again hit another triple to cut it to two with five seconds on the clock.
  • Womack was next to hit 1-of-2 from the line, but Coach Ireland elected to foul after the inbound with a three-point lead.
  • Jonathan Floyd hit the first and tried to miss the second attempt intentionally but missed the rim, handing the ball back to the Birds.
  • Bell missed both in an attempt to let Carey touch the ball and run the clock out with 0.6 to go, but the ref's made a questionable call saying the clock started too soon.
  • It gave the Crusaders one last heave at the basket needing a tip in. The pass was knocked away and the Roadrunners held on for the 84-82 win.
