#4 Dalton State Advances To SSAC Championship Game


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – #4 Dalton State used a solid second half effort from the free throw line to defeat (RV) Stillman (Ala.) 79-70 in the semifinals of the SSAC Basketball Championship presented by Newk's Eatery at Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • Stillman got the first basket to make it 2-0 but Kevon Tucker called the bank and deposited a three-ball to get the early lead.
  • The Tigers were fired up and it showed on the court early going up 15-7 and forcing a Dalton State timeout at the 13:44 mark.
  • The next stage of the game belonged to the Birds as they outscored the Tigers 16-7 to take a 23-21 lead and force a Stillman timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, DS put together a 12-4 run to get the lead into double-digits (35-25) with 3:04 left in the half.
  • Stillman worked to cut into the lead and got it to six right before the half, but Tucker took a pass off a missed free throw with less than five seconds on the clock and launched a triple from beyond NBA range that tickled the twine to give the Roadrunners a 42-33 lead at the half.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • SC scored seven-straight to start the half and cut it to a two-point game (42-40).
  • It did not take long for the Birds to counter, scoring the next seven points to get the lead back to nine (49-40) with 14:15 remaining.
  • The game ebb-and-flowed after with Stillman cutting into the lead, and the Roadrunners answering to increase it back to double-digits.
  • Randy Bell knocked down two from the charity stripe at the 4:08 mark to give the Roadrunners a 12-point lead (69-57).
  • With time running down, the Tigers picked up the pace on the offensive end and pressed in the full court on the defensive side.
  • Stillman cut the lead to four points (72-68) with 52 ticks on the clock, but Dalton State was solid from the free throw line down the stretch and pulled away for a 79-70 win.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#4 Dalton State (Ga.) improves to 29-3 overall with the win, while (RV) Stillman (Ala.) falls to 20-10 overall with the loss. Five Birds scored in double-figures with Randy Bell leading the charge with 17 points and five rebounds.
 
Kevon Tucker and Rodley Adjei posted identical stat lines with 14 points and seven boards each. Igor Stokic had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Dauson Womack scored 11 points and pulled seven off the glass.
 
Prince McDaniel led Stillman with 15 points. Shemar Johnson had 14 points, with Devin Merriweather adding 11 points. After scoring 31 against the Roadrunners at Bandy Gym on January 30, Giovanni Bray was held in check. The senior from Milwaukee, Wisc. had a defender glued to him at all times and only mustered six points on 1-of-7 shooting from the floor.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State owned the glass to the tune of a 51-35 advantage, but Stillman nipped the Birds in the paint (28-26). The Tigers challenged the Roadrunners at the rim in the second half and forced awkward shots that led to a 6-for-26 (23.1%) clip from the floor. What won the game for the Roadrunners was their efficiency from the charity stripe where they were 23-for-30 (76.7%) in the second half and 35-for-42 (83.3%) for the game.

#4 Dalton State will take on the winner of #4-seed Loyola (La.) and #1-seed Faulkner (Ala.) tomorrow, March 7 at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. Tip-Off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT).
