#4 Roadrunners Set New School Record In Regular Season Finale At Middle Georgia


COCHRAN, Ga. – #4 Dalton State withstood a second half charge from Middle Georgia to hold on for an 89-84 win to end the regular season and propel the Roadrunners into the SSAC Tournament as the #2-seed.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State raced out of the box to build a quick lead (12-9) with 14:31 on the clock.
  • A 20-4 run from the Birds that lasted until the 9:25 mark drew the lead out to 21 (32-11).
  • A small run from Middle Georgia capped by a three-ball from Jordan Willis cut the lead to 13 points (39-26).
  • The Roadrunners responded by outscoring the Knights 8-2 over the final two minutes to take a 19-point lead (47-28) into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Kevon Tucker got the lead back to 21 points (53-32) with a bucket in the paint at the 17:25 mark.
  • By the midway point of the half, Middle Georgia gained some momentum and began a run that slashed the Roadrunner lead to 12 (62-50).
  • They continued the run and made it a ballgame again by the 8:11 mark. In all, it was an 18-4 run that lasted over 5 and a half minutes.
  • The Birds worked hard to match baskets with the Knights and found a way to get the lead back to eight with just over four minutes to go.
  • Middle Georgia hit some timely shots to stay in the game, but time would run out on the upset bid as Dalton State ended the regular season with the 89-84 victory.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#4 Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (27-3 overall, 15-3 SSAC) with the win, while Middle Georgia State falls to (13-14 overall, 9-9 SSAC) with the loss. Randy Bell led Dalton State with 25 points and five rebounds. C.J. Perry had 16 points, while Rodley Adjei added 14 points.
 
Kevon Tucker was the last Roadrunner in double-figures with 12 points and seven boards. Igor Stokic was again close to a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
 
Four Knights scored in double-figures with Ijon Owens leading with 22 points. De'Miria Glover had 19 points and nine rebounds, while Jordan Willis had 17 and Michael Graham had 10.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Middle Georgia won the rebounding edge (40-39), while points in the paint were even at 34-34. Points off turnovers were in the Knights favor as well (19-17). Second chance points went to the Roadrunners (12-9) as did bench points (34-24).
 
Dalton State went 14-for-31 (45.2%) from the field in the first half in building a 19-point halftime lead, but only managed to go 10-for-27 (37%) in the second half. In contrast, Middle Georgia hit at a 31.4% (11-for-35) clip in the first half, but stormed back by shooting 50% (17-for-34) from the floor in the second period.
 
With the win, Dalton State sets the single-season school record for regular season wins with 27, surpassing the 2013-14 Roadrunners who won 26 games in their first season and were not elibigle for postseason play.

#4 Dalton State will play the winner of the #7/#10 game between William Carey (Miss.) and Blue Mountain (Miss.) in the SSAC Tournament at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday, March 5. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. (CT).
