#18 Roadrunners Run Out Of Steam In Second Half, Fall To Kennesaw State


KENNESAW, Ga. – Dalton State got a crack at an NCAA DI and held their own with just seven players available but fell short in the end with a 72-62 defeat at KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • KSU scored the first seven points of the game for the early lead two minutes in.
  • C.J. Perry hit a three to cut the deficit to 4, but Kennesaw State answered with 9 more to take a 13-point lead (16-3).
  • The lead stayed in double-digits until A.J. Hassell put the team on his back and keyed a 12-2 run that saw the Roadrunners pull even at 26-26 with 3:09 left in the half.
  • Dalton State tied it up again at 28-28, but KSU outscored the Birds 6-4 to take a 34-32 lead into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • The second period started the same as the first with the Owls jumping out with 10 quick points and taking a 9-point lead (44-35).
  • DS began to chip away at the lead and had it down to 4 points, 48-44, at the 13:53 mark, but KSU responded with a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 14 points (58-44) with 11:50 to go.
  • The lead grew to 16 points (64-48) with 8:41 left after a Chris Youngblood layup.
  • Dalton State tried to cut into the lead, but got no closer than 10 points as Kennesaw State prevailed, 72-62.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#18 Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (0-2 overall) with the loss, while Kennesaw State improves to (3-2 overall) with the win. Marquel Wiggins and A.J. Hassell led the Birds with 24 and 22 points respectively. They were the only players in double-figures for the Roadrunners. Wiggins added 9 boards to his stat line, while Hassell added 2 assists.
 
Chris Youngblood and Spencer Rodgers scored in double-digits to lead the Owls. Youngblood had 24 with Rodgers adding 21. They too were the only players to score in double-figures for their squad.  Rodgers snatched 7 balls off the glass, while Brandon Stroud and Alex Peterson had 6 and 5 boards respectively.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Kennesaw State held a 10-rebound advantage at 34-24, a rare feat against the Roadrunners. Dalton State continued to be efficient from the charity stripe converting on 19-of-22 opportunities for an 86.4% percentage. In contrast, the Owls went 11-for-18 at a 61.1% clip.
 
Normally efficient from the field under Coach Ireland, the Birds only shot 38% (19-for-50), while the Owls shot 49.1% (26-for-53). The three-ball hurt the Roadrunners in the second half as they only hit 1-of-7 shots in the second half compared to 6-of-17 in the first half.

#18 Dalton State will be back on the hardwood again on Tuesday, December 15 when they tangle with Martin Methodist (Tenn.). Tipoff at Bandy Gym is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
